While director Shawn Levy hopes that his upcoming Uncharted movie will become a franchise the size and scale of Spielberg's classic Indiana Jones series, the movie will be very "anti-Indy" according to screenwriter Joe Carnahan. Made for a generation that didn't grow up with the long-running framchise, Uncharted will feature a younger Nathan Drake and explore the adventurer's roots for the first time.

Those who have played Sony's widely-acclaimed franchise will know the famous adventurer as an experienced thief and action hero who has grappled with death more times than the average mercenary. In the Uncharted movie, Spider-Man: Homecoming's Tom Holland will be playing a very different version of Nathan Drake, and Carnahan claims the result will sever all ties the film has with Indiana Jones too.

"What I’ve written is very anti-Indy in the sense of the guy that loves museums and wants to preserve these artifacts. He’s not! He’s a thief and he’s a grifter, and he’s a scourge. He and Sully are not good guys but they’re better than the bad guys."

uncharted 4 game of the year

Nathan Drake's lack of traditional heroism has always been part of what makes him such an interesting character in the Uncharted series and it'll be interesting to see how this translates to the big screen. Telling a story prior to the events of the first four Uncharted games, the film will give fans something they've been asking for since the series began and will provide an insight into how Drake became the death-defying adventurer we know him as today.

As much as Nathan Drake is a staple of the Uncharted series, the latest addition to the long-running franchise will star a rather different set of protagonists. Moving on from Drake's story, unlikely heroes Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross will form an uneasy alliance in their adventure in the upcoming Uncharted: Lost Legacy.

The title which launches tomorrow, exclusively for PlayStation 4, will be a new step for the franchise and if all goes well, might just launch a new series of games starring the unlikely duo. Whether this is likely to happen or not depends on the game's sales, as well as how Chloe and Nadine's stories conclude in their very first adventure together.

Uncharted currently has no release date.
