Since its debut in 2019, The Umbrella Academy has become one of Netflix's most popular installments, breaking viewership records and receiving numerous accolades. Based on the graphic novel series written by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bá, the show has captivated millions of fans worldwide with its exploration of family dynamics and trauma throughout three seasons. Now, the story of the dysfunctional Hargreeves family is coming to an end.

Earlier this week, Netflix announced via social media that The Umbrella Academy had been renewed for a fourth and final season. According to Deadline, showrunner and executive producer Steve Blackman expressed his excitement about fans experiencing "the fitting end to the Hargreeves siblings’ journey" that began in 2017 when the show started production.

"But before we get to that conclusion, we’ve got an amazing story ahead for season four, one that will have fans on the edge of their seats until the final minutes," added Blackman. Although many details —such as an official release date— remain unclear, season 4 will see the return of Elliot Page (Viktor/Number 7), Tom Hopper (Luther/Number 1), David Castañeda (Diego/Number 2), Emmy Raver-Lampman (Allison/Number 3), Robert Sheehan (Klaus/Number 4), Aidan Gallagher (Number 5), Justin H. Min (Ben/Number 6), Ritu Arya (Lila), and Colm Feore (Sir Reginald). Per Deadline, series regulars Adam Godley (Pogo), Genesis Rodriguez (Sloane/Sparrow Number 5), and Britne Oldford (Fei/Sparrow Number 3) are not listed, though the fate of their characters is unknown.

The news comes just over a month after the release of Umbrella Academy season 3, which saw the Hargreeves ending up in an alternate reality where they never existed. Instead, the siblings encountered a different group of superheroes, The Sparrow Academy. The Hargreeves soon learned that, after their encounter with Sir Reginald in 1963, he adopted Ben and six other children, which ultimately changed the timeline.

Understandably during season 3, The Umbrella Academy clashed with the Sparrows, all while trying to prevent another apocalypse. After much bloodshed and even a wedding, the family discovered that Sir Reginald had planned everything to create a version of reality he controls and where the siblings have no powers. The season ends with the group trapped in this new timeline and deciding to live their life as regular humans. The plot of season 4 will likely revolve around the siblings coping with their loss of power and putting an end to their father's tactics once and for all.

The Umbrella Academy seasons 1-3 are available on Netflix.
