In a statement provided to PC Gamer, a company representative said that these cuts were to make sure that the company could deliver its ambitious development roadmap. The representative goes further, stating that this "targeted realignment" has affected 33 employees of the company. Ubisoft Toronto says that the company plans to help the employees that are being let go by supporting them with severance and career assistance to help with the transition. Ubisoft Montreal previously laid off nearly 100 employees due to a similar "restructuring" effort in late-2023.

Ubisoft Toronto's Current Projects

This wave of layoffs hitting Ubisoft Toronto is rather ill-timed. As mentioned previously, Ubisoft Toronto was brought on to help develop the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake, which at the time was seen as an exciting update. While Ubisoft Toronto is going to lose employees, the remake is still supposedly targeting a 2026 release window, though a specific date hasn't been provided yet.

Ubisoft Toronto was also working on a remake of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, which was first announced in 2021 but has similarly seen few updates since its announcement. While insiders have said that there's "nothing bad" going on with the title, and it simply requires more time, these layoffs are likely going to affect its development as well. Despite these rounds of layoffs, Ubisoft says that it will not impact any ongoing work, and that the team is working to deliver on these projects.
