Ubisoft has announced it will be ending online services for ten of its older games, including several classic Assassin's Creed titles. The sunsetting of online services is nothing new in the world of gaming, with developers often shutting down servers for many of their older games. Even console servers and marketplaces are not safe from an inevitable end with Nintendo announcing earlier this month that it would be shutting down Nintendo 3DS and Wii U online servers next year. Now, Ubisoft is the newest developer to announce the end of online support for several games.

As one of the developer's most iconic franchises, early Assassin's Creed games boasted their own online functionality for a variety of purposes. Online multiplayer was a mainstay of many older Assassin's Creed games, featuring PvP modes pitting players against one another in battle with a variety of different scenarios. The multiplayer segments of the franchise have largely faded from newer entries in the series, with Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Assassin's Creed Mirage shedding traditional multiplayer gameplay entirely. Now, several Assassin's Creed games among others will be losing their online functionality.

Ubisoft officially announced the sunsetting of ten games' online servers on Monday, including multiple Assassin's Creed games. As reported by Insider Gaming, the list of games seeing their online servers shut down features four different Assassin's Creed games, including Assassin's Creed 2 and Assassin's Creed Revelations. The shutdown is reportedly scheduled for early next year, with the online services set to end on January 25. Other notable games on the list of online shutdowns include the Xbox 360 servers for Splinter Cell: Conviction and PC servers for motocross game Trials Evolution.

The sunsetting of multiple older Assassin's Creed games comes on the heels of the debut of the long-running franchise's newest entry. Ubisoft debuted Assassin's Creed Mirage earlier this month, bringing the series' iconic brand of stealth action gameplay to the Middle East during the Islamic Golden Age. Assassin's Creed Mirage has seen mostly positive reviews from fans and critics, with many feeling the game harkens back to the franchise's earlier entries for better or worse. However, fans have particularly criticized main character Basim for the bland writing for Assassin's Creed's newest protagonist.

With many of Assassin's Creed's older games being sunsetted, one particular Assassin's Creed game has been the topic of several rumors. Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag has frequently been rumored to be potentially be receiving a remake, with some leaks and moves from Ubisoft hinting at more to come. Black Flag was recently quietly de-listed from Steam, sparking speculation that a full remake may be in the works. Ubisoft's announced shutdown will see the studio part ways with many of its older games while rumors continue to persist about new entries.
