The last couple of years have seen some pretty amazing games being launched, which, for many, has helped ease the anxiety of living in a global pandemic. 2020 alone saw the release of some highly-praised titles, such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, and Half-Life: Alyx. Among them were also The Last of Us 2 and Doom Eternal, which were also very well received. However, for some reason, fans have been taking to social media to compare the latter two side-by-side, despite them being completely different games.
It all started on Twitter a couple of days ago. User @JoeMiller101 uploaded a post extolling the virtues of Naughty Dog's masterful sequel The Last of Us 2. A comment followed shortly after, in which another user made a comment about how the game "DESTROYED" id Software's ground-breaking Doom Eternal, specifically in terms of ratings and overall recognition. What ensued was a number of other argumentative posts, particularly when it came to weapon models, with some questioning why one game was being compared to the other.
While some took to the social media platform to express their love of one over the other, others were perplexed that such things as the chaotic weapons of Doom Eternal could ever be likened to the more down-to-earth arsenal of The Last of Us 2. The overall back-and-forth arguments among the community seem ultimately silly. User @kukuruyo made the relevant point about how "people are still arguing" about the infinitesimal differences between one game and the other, with @big_meem pointing out that the games are not comparable, and are "entirely different experiences."
While The Last of Us 2 grabbed a slew of awards, Doom Eternal is just as highly praised, but for different reasons. Both received overall positive critical reception, and both are seen as strong sequels to already notable releases. However, the thread on Twitter might provide a small amount of entertainment for those who decide to scroll through it, and no doubt pretty much everyone will have an opinion of their own.
In the end, it all just boils down to standard internet arguments about topics that seem to baffle even the players themselves. Video game fans are always arguing about something. What makes this one stand out a little is the fact that two games that are in no way alike are being pitted against each other. Some people prefer The Last of Us 2, while others prefer Doom Eternal, but it's difficult to see how the two can go head-to-head.
