Last year, reputable sources indicated that Sony was looking at producing a Twisted Metal reboot game to coincide with the TV series based on the franchise. It then came to light that the Twisted Metal reboot was in development at Lucid Games, the studio behind the poorly-received PS5 exclusive Destruction AllStars. The latest reports indicated that the Twisted Metal reboot was switching developers, and now we may know exactly who is behind the new game.
VGC originally reported that the Twisted Metal reboot was swapping developers, though at the time was unable to share the identity of the new developer. VGC has since revealed that the Twisted Metal reboot is supposedly being developed by Firesprite, a studio that has primarily worked on virtual reality games for PlayStation VR and is even developing Horizon: Call of the Mountain, one of the first games revealed for PlayStation VR2.
Since Firesprite has worked almost exclusively on VR games, some may be scratching their heads at the studio being handed the reigns of the Twisted Metal reboot. However, fans should withhold judgment for now, especially since the game hasn't even been announced in an official capacity. Before getting too excited about the Twisted Metal reboot in one direction or the other, fans should wait to actually see the game in action.
Anyone worried about the quality of the Twisted Metal reboot likely has nothing to worry about, as PlayStation takes great pride in its exclusive releases and is unlikely to release a game that doesn't meet its expectations. Not only that, but Sony clearly has confidence in Firesprite, as PlayStation Studios acquired Firesprite last year.
As it stands, very little is known about the Twisted Metal reboot or what it will entail. It's possible that the work Lucid Games has done on the project will carry over to the Firesprite version, but it's also possible that Firesprite will be starting from scratch. Rumors indicate that the new Twisted Metal game will be free-to-play, but that can't be verified without any kind of official announcement about the project.
We also know that Twisted Metal creator David Jaffe is not involved in the reboot, but otherwise the game is mostly a mystery. If the rumors about a Twisted Metal reboot are true and it's accurate that the game is looking to release alongside the TV series in 2023, then one has to imagine that more information on the project will come sooner rather than later.
