Almost 30 years after one of the most bizarre bits of television aired, the mysterious world of Twin Peaks once again inspires an equally absurd video game, titled Twin Peaks VR, which released a new trailer to prepare players for a strange new experience. The title is set to release later this month through Steam VR, playable on both the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive.

This isn't the first time that the strange style and themes of Twin Peaks has influences a video game. The notoriously complex and bizarre title that was recently ported to the Nintendo Switch, Deadly Premonition, has famously been rumored by the twisted murder mystery of the original Twin Peaks TV series.

In the spirit of Twin Peaks, the game seems to also be the very definition of the surreal, with dozens of Easter Eggs and references to the original TV series. From what little information the trailer provided, it seems as though the player will be an outsider much like series lead Dale Cooper, tasked with entering the town of Twin Peaks and unraveling a mystery. As such, it's hard to say exactly how far the VR title will take players, or whether there will be a true conclusion to the strange story, unlike the original Twin Peaks series.

It would seem that December has been a big month for strange VR title announcements, with I Am Jesus Christ releasing its first trailer only a day before the Twin Peaks teaser. This could be a response to Valve's latest announcement about its ongoing support of VR, beginning with its flagship title Half-Life: Alyx, but considering that these games have been in development for some time, it is much more likely that this is a coincidence. However, the recent focus on VR content following the Valve announcement is likely a significant benefit for the strange new titles releasing on the platform.

With VR headsets selling faster than ever, there is a ripe market out there waiting to dive into the strange opportunities that VR currently offers. Combine the growing market with the cult following and air of mystery that the original Twin Peaks series has garnered over the years, and Twin Peaks VR has a lot of promise to be one of the most popular new VR titles when it releases later this month. That is, if fans can wrap their heads around the convoluted story for long enough to encourage others to jump aboard.

Twin Peaks VR is set to release in December 2019 for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, with a PSVR and Oculus Quest version TBD after release.
