True Detective: Night Country footage was included in an HBO teaser that offered fans a tantalizing first glimpse of the new season and the rest of the HBO lineup. The new True Detective season stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis.

Fans of True Detective have been clamoring for information on the upcoming season of the HBO crime series. The new season is being helmed by Tigers Are Not Afraid director Issa López. The director, with an eye toward urban grit and the vaguely supernatural menace of her film, fits the world fans wanted more of after True Detective season one's King in Yellow subplot.

True Detective, HBO's crime anthology series created by Nic Pizzolato, is gearing up for another run of twisty, dark episodes dealing with the worst humanity has to offer. López is directing a cast that includes Jodie Foster as Liz Danvers and Reis as Evangeline Navarro in True Detective: Night Country, so named because it’s set in Alaska in the territory where the sun doesn’t rise for months. Per Francesca Orsi, HBO's Executive Vice President of Programming, “When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the six men that operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice."

The teaser offers glimpses of what to expect in True Detective season 4. Both detectives are seen in large, fur-lined coats investigating dark rooms. “I’m working on this case. These men disappeared 48 hours ago,” says Liz Danvers as she moves through hockey arenas and offices. Shots show her partner and herself in their winter coats investigating in the snow, the rain, and the darkness, their cop characters fulfilling the US postal worker’s motto of delivering under any conditions. Another shot shows her and her partner with their guns drawn and taking down a perp who is on his knees as they approach him. The last shot shows Danvers investigating something as a light flickers on and off, closing in on her face. Whatever it is will have fans excited when the show drops next year.

True Detective season 1 dealt with a pair of detectives played by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, as they recounted a case they’d failed to solve in the 1990s to a group of detectives investigating it today. It would see the pair solving a series of murders of local women in service to a weird cult that believed in Robert Chamber's The King In Yellow. True Detective season 2 saw Colin Ferrell, Rachel McAdams, and Taylor Kitsch as three Southern California detectives converging on the murder of a man trying to sell land within the tangled web of California's many crime interests. True Detective season 3 saw Mahershala Ali playing a detective in three timelines: the '80s when his case began, the '90s when he revisited it, and 2015 when he was an elderly man suffering from Alzheimer's and trying to piece together what he can remember in a story about the ultimate futility of trying to know the facts about everything.

True Detective: Night Country is expected to release in 2023 on HBO.
