First announced in February of this year alongside a playable demo, Square Enix’s strategy RPG Project Triangle Strategy looks to be an exciting prospect for Nintendo Switch owners. Created by the same team that produced the critically-acclaimed Octopath Traveler, the now simply-titled Triangle Strategy features the same incredibly striking 2d-HD art style used by that game.

With turn-based combat taking place on a grid, Triangle Strategy looks to channel genre classics like Final Fantasy Tactics and the Fire Emblem series. The demo released earlier this year was well-received and Square Enix has taken feedback from that trial to improve various aspects of the game like UI changes and difficulty tweaks for the full release, so fans have been eager to get more information and further playtime with the title.

On September 23rd, Nintendo hosted its September Nintendo Direct, which featured a multitude of various announcements like an expansion to Monster Hunter Rise called Sunbreak and a Switch version of Disco Elysium. During this show, fans got to see another trailer for Triangle Strategy which revealed the game’s upcoming release date, March 4th, 2022.

The new trailer also gave fans a quick look at some light gameplay, showing some combat effects and several beautiful character portraits. The title is set to feature tough decisions that really matter and have consequences, and as such the trailer strongly emphasizes the game’s deep, branching narrative, calling the title, “A Tactical RPG that will challenge your convictions.”

Triangle Strategy certainly has plenty to live up to if it is being compared to renowned titles like Nintendo’s own Fire Emblem franchise or Final Fantasy Tactics, which many consider to be one of the greatest SRPGs of all time. Square Enix has a significant amount of experience with games of this type, so genre fans are understandably excited. Triangle Strategy's game length is expected to be around 50 hours, but with high replayability. The game should have a plethora of hard choices that will make multiple playthroughs worthwhile for players.

Of course, Triangle Strategy wasn’t the only impressive title shown at this September’s Nintendo Direct. Kirby and the Forgotten Land stole the shore for many viewers as the title looks to be a very ambitious 3d adventure that looks more similar to a 3d Mario game than any Kirby title from the past. Still, as far as Strategy RPGs go, Triangle Strategy certainly has plenty of eyes on its upcoming March release.

Triangle Strategy is set to release on March 4th, 2022 for the Nintendo Switch.
