Recent rumors suggest that famed RTS developer Creative Assembly may currently be working on a new Total War game set in the Star Wars universe, alongside two other projects. With the latest installments in the series being met with some controversy among fans, a Star Wars-themed Total War game could be just what Creative Assembly needs to revitalize interest in the franchise and capture a more mainstream audience.

The Total War series has served as a major pillar of the RTS genre throughout its 24-year-run, though it has experienced a number of ups and downs over the decades. The most recent entry in the franchise, 2023's Total War: Pharaoh, for instance, launched to largely mixed reception from both fans and critics. 2022's Total War: Warhammer 3, meanwhile, was criticized by players for its expensive DLC and expansions, which many claimed didn't offer enough content to justify their price tags. Backlash was so strong, in fact, that Creative Assembly apologized to the community for the missteps, vowing to improve future titles in the Total War franchise going forward. As for what one of these upcoming Total War games could be, it seems like fans may now have a clearer picture of what to expect.

For players looking for an experience similar to Total War: Warhammer, here are some games to check out.

According to a new report from DualShockers, Creative Assembly is allegedly developing "a total of three new Total War games," one of which is said to be "an officially licensed Star Wars game." It is claimed that this rumored Total War: Star Wars entry is the second of the three aforementioned titles currently in development, "as of October 2023." However, DualShockers was unable to determine which of these upcoming games is closest to release. The wording here, though, does seem to suggest that Total War: Star Wars could be launched within the next few years.

A Total War Game Set in the Star Wars Universe Could Be a Refreshing Take on the RTS Franchise

Since the release of Total War: Attila in 2015, Creative Assembly's celebrated action RTS franchise has received a new installment almost every year, except for in 2021. Based off of the developer's annual release cadence, it's possible that these three upcoming titles will be released over the next three years, assuming that there's another Total War game set to launch in 2024. Since Total War: Star Wars is apparently the second of the three titles in development, then perhaps it could be released in 2025 if it's been in the works for enough time.

The proposition of a crossover between these two beloved franchises will likely excite both Total War fans and Star Wars enthusiasts alike. If this game truly is in development, then it might just be the ace up Creative Assembly's sleeve that it may use to propel the Total War series to new levels of popularity and success. Even if this rumored Total War: Star Wars title doesn't exist, fans will at least be pleased to know that Jedi: Survivor developer Respawn Entertainment is making a Star Wars strategy game of its own. So, nonetheless, it seems like gamers will be getting a Star Wars-themed title in the strategy genre no matter what, whether it's part of the Total War franchise or not.
