A documentary based on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater failed to reach its crowdfunding goal this week, but the producers of the film say they still intend to move forward with the project. "Pretending I'm a Superman: The Tony Hawk Game Story" raised only $17,409 on Indiegogo on a goal of $75,000, but unlike Kickstarter, Indiegogo is not all-or-nothing, so the makers will at least receive some funding.

The filmmakers, Ralph D'Amato and Ludvig Gur, put out a lengthy statement via the documentary's official Twitter after the crowdfunding period came to an end. It's worth noting that D'Amato once served as a producer on early games in the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater franchise.

"Our plan was never to entirely rely on an Indiegogo campaign," the statement reads. "If we would have received the full sum, the process of making the documentary may have gone faster but we are in it for the long or short haul, regardless. Multiple sponsors have shown great interest and because of that we'll continue."

When completed, the documentary will include interviews with Tony Hawk himself and is also expected to feature many of the developers and real life skaters who have worked on the franchise's five games over the years. It was a chance to look back at a franchise that many gamers today hold in high esteem, and to hear from the folks that helped make the project happen. Unfortunately, interest in a documentary and funding a documentary are not one in the same, and so the Indiegogo campaign couldn't make its goal.

While it's good to hear that the filmmakers are moving forward with their vision regardless of this setback, it's hard not to wonder if this is a sign of the Tony Hawk franchise simply not being as popular as it used to be. Several 90's and early 00's projects have found new life with reboots and remakes, but Tony Hawk's Pro Skater  was not so lucky.

It's no secret that Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5 released to negative reviews and suffered from a significant number of embarrassing bugs that seriously disappointed longtime fans. Then again, if the filmmakers do actually manage to get this documentary made, perhaps that'll be the shot in the arm the franchise so clearly needs right now if there is going to be a Pro Skater 6 some day.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5 is out now for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360.
