When the original Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater released back in the late ‘90s, it was an impressive entry in the admittedly sparse action sports genre. From a technical standpoint, the game was silky smooth, and its gameplay featured fluid movements and transitions, and that was all while running on the original PlayStation.

For the recently released Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5, however, the same compliments apparently do not apply. According to gamers who have gone hands-on with THPS 5, the current-gen sequel is overwrought with glitches.

As readers can see in the video below, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 has some serious collision detection problems. In some cases, they manifest by players’ skaters falling through the ground, and in others the environments send the skater rocketing backwards in the opposite direction. Sure, it’s fun to watch, but for a brand new game – one that was supposed to rejuvenate a franchise – this is hardly what fans want to see.

To make matters worse, these Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 problems have persisted even after a Day 1 patch. Had the patch fixed these problems, we may not be focusing on them as much, but because this is in a finished product it’s best to warn potential buyers ahead of time.

Glitches in sports games are nothing new, especially when animation transitions are so prevalent, but we doubt anyone expected Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 to have issues like this. The original may not have been perfect, but the bugs were far less noticeable. Gamers couldn’t make a montage set to classical music of Tony Hawk falling through the ground and bouncing off the walls, for example.

That being said, the technical issues with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater don’t seem as widespread at this current juncture. Granted, many are still criticizing the game, but not for bugs. Rather, it seems the game’s cel-shaded art style is drawing the most raised eyebrows from fans of the franchise.

Ultimately, gamers will have to wait and see whether Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 is able to kickflip back into the limelight on current-gen platforms. This was a big opportunity for Activision and Hawk, and it will likely be their only one. So it’s a shame to see the game release with any bugs at all, no matter how isolated they may be.

Have you noticed any bugs while playing Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5? Do you find the gameplay and art style appealing?

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 is out now for PS4 and Xbox One, while a PS3 and Xbox 360 release is planned for November 10th.
