  • A rumor from Jeff Grubb hints at a new game set in the Titanfall universe, but it's not Titanfall 3.
  • Despite fan desire, Respawn Entertainment's focus on Apex Legends and other games makes a Titanfall 3 as unlikely as ever.
  • While Titanfall 3's future remains uncertain, a new game involving Titans and set in the same universe could be on the way, and that's exciting.

Despite almost a decade passing since the release of the first Titanfall, the gaming community still holds the series dear. Fueled by the enduring popularity of the sequel, fans are eagerly awaiting any details concerning a new installment to the Titanfall universe. While the recent rumor that a new Titanfall game is in development is an exciting thought, there is a caveat.

Titanfall fans, facing a long drought of new content, might be surprised by any news about the series in 2024. After all, Respawn Entertainment's seemingly prioritizing Apex Legends has dampened hopes of Titanfall 3 happening. Notably, while there's speculation that a fresh Titanfall game is currently in the works, it doesn't appear that the narrative will be directly connected to the first two games.

Rumors Claim That The Upcoming Game Is Not Titanfall 3

The rumor originated on March 4 from video game journalist Jeff Grubb's podcast, Game Mess Mornings. During the podcast, Grubb claims that Steve Fukuda, the director of Titanfall 2, is heading the development team for a new game set in the Titanfall universe. While this team has been public knowledge since May 2023, their original purpose was simply "finding the fun in something new," leaving specifics unclear. The prototype is reportedly still in its early stages, but continuing to gather steam.

Unfortunately, even if the speculation turns out to be true, Grubb stressed that his sources are adamant that this project won't be Titanfall 3. Though it's clear some fans would like a threequel to be made, it doesn't appear it's happening anytime soon. About 28 minutes into his podcast, Grubb says “Whenever I do look into it, they’re not making Titanfall 3, they just straight up aren’t."

Grubb further clarified on Twitter that the rumored game may still feature Titans in some capacity. This connection to the Titanfall universe hints at the possibility that the new game could lean more towards Apex Legends' approach rather than replicating elements of Titanfall. After all, though related, with Apex Legends set 18 years after Titanfall 2, the battle royale doesn't quite fulfill the desires that a direct sequel to the 2016 game could.

In Time, Titanfall 3 Could Still Happen

Unfortunately, the future of the Titanfall series seems uncertain. In February 2023, EA canceled a project codenamed Titanfall Legends, raising concerns about the series' development process. Following this came rumors that a scrapped Titanfall 3 was reportedly in development for ten months before it was terminated. As such, while Respawn's CEO has expressed interest in Titanfall 3, it seems the studio is still waiting for the right moment.

While Fukuda's new project isn't Titanfall 3, the possibility of a third game in the series remains. Though details have been scarce, Respawn Entertainment is still clearly invested in the Titanfall universe. Hopefully, in time, more concrete news regarding Fukuda's upcoming game and plans for Titanfall 3 will be revealed.
