Highlights

  • Titanfall 3, which has been highly anticipated by the FPS community, could finally be in development after the cancellation of the third title four years ago.
  • Clues found in the patch notes of Apex Legends and a circulating teaser trailer suggest that Respawn Entertainment has something up its sleeve and may be preparing for a reveal of Titanfall 3.
  • If the rumors are true, Respawn should make sure to avoid the release problem from Titanfall 2, which faced unnecessary competition from Battlefield and Call of Duty.

The FPS community has held the Titanfall franchise in high regard since the first installment was released nearly a decade ago. As such, it's clear why rumors that Titanfall 3 is in development have caused so much excitement. While Respawn Entertainment has not yet officially confirmed if Titanfall 3 is on the way, it's important that Respawn doesn't repeat a critical mistake from when the sequel came out.

Titanfall 3 has been in high demand since Titanfall 2 was released in October 2016. Unfortunately for fans of the shooter, it was confirmed that the third title was canceled after less than a year of progress. Though the riveting campaign of the sequel was extremely popular, Respawn Entertainment opted to shift its focus to its multiplayer elements. This work eventually became Apex Legends. Now that it's been four years since the battle royale made its debut, Titanfall 3 is a very real possibility, despite the initial decision to axe the project.

A few weeks ago, Apex Legends players discovered what may be a hidden message within the patch notes for Apex Legends' Harbinger's Collection Event. After Twitter user Iniq1ty attempted to decipher the string of numbers, they found a reference to the release dates of the first and second Titanfall games along with Apex Legends. Additionally, this week a video claiming to be a teaser trailer for Titanfall 3 began to circulate on Twitter, further solidifying the idea that Respawn Entertainment has something up its sleeve.

Of course, if Titanfall 3 wants to truly have a chance when it comes out, it needs to be careful not to mistime its release. Even though Titanfall 2 is one of the best first-person shooters of all time, it launched around the same time as Battlefield and two Call of Duty titles. All three of these games have cemented themselves as staples of the shooter genre, which means Respawn Entertainment's sequel was facing a lot of unnecessary competition from the start.

The teaser trailer that is being shared claims that news about Titanfall 3 will be released on October 27. While some believe that the brief video is fake, an official statement from the studio could still some around at some point. Perhaps the date will genuinely bear good news for the Titanfall community.

Still, it's unlikely that this "worldwide reveal" will see the game coming out this year. For instance, the Titanfall sequel was confirmed in March 2015, but it took another 19 months to be fully completed. If Respawn Entertainment stays faithful to this timeline, that would put the next installment around May 2025. This is quite some time from now, but it's extremely pertinent that Titanfall 3 considers what other games are coming out in any given month in order to avoid scheduling conflicts with other big IPs, especially fellow shooters.

Seeing as there was a concept for Titanfall 3before Respawn prioritized Apex Legends, it's not hard to believe that the game could be nearing the later stages of development. Hopefully, the studio will make a public statement soon. At the very least, fans should take note of October 27 in case the rumors turn out to be correct.
