Titanfall 2 has released a new game mode almost seven years after its launch, which can be seen as surprising, as the title didn’t receive any significant updates for a long time, except for fixing bugs. Titanfall 2 is one of the best first-person shooters out there, with excellent gunplay and traversal mechanics, and the new game mode is exciting news for fans of the franchise who were previously feeling abandoned by Respawn Entertainment.

The original Titanfall came out in 2014 and was a console exclusive for Xbox. The game, which was multiplayer-only, didn’t fare very well with critics, but this didn’t stop Respawn from releasing Titanfall 2 two years later. The new game had a pretty good single-player campaign and a multiplatform release and was hailed as a huge improvement over its predecessor. However, Titanfall 2 was a good game that came out at the wrong time and lost the spotlight to games like Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, preventing it from being as successful as it could have been.

Now, an account known as alphaINTEL, which reports on Titanfall and Apex Legends news, has discovered that there’s a new game mode for Titanfall 2 called “???.” This game mode allows for infinite rockets, giving players the chance to come back to Titanfall 2 and explode everything with unlimited ammo. Curiously, the description of the new mode has a reference to a quote from Frank Miller’s 300: “Your rockets will blot out of the sun,” which is essentially the same phrase as the original, but changing arrows for rockets.

Delivering updates like this one so many years after a game’s release is quite curious, so many fans are already wondering if this could mean that the franchise is coming back. A few days ago, some fans devised a theory that Titanfall 3 may be coming out eventually after seeing a cryptic message in Apex Legends, which used some numbers that referenced the release dates of previous games in the franchise.

However, gamers should not get their hopes up just yet, as Titanfall 3 was canceled after almost a year of development. According to the developers, several issues related to multiplayer, as well as a dwindling player base, led the project to be abandoned a few years ago. So, it’s far from guaranteed that the studio will try to develop a sequel again. In any case, gamers should wait for an official announcement of Titanfall 3 before getting too hyped about the possibility.

Titanfall 2 is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
