Video game publisher THQ Nordic today detailed its recent relief efforts centered on the ongoing war in Ukraine, including a refugee housing program and multiple other humanitarian initiatives. This bit of insight into the last 15 months of the company's activities arrives shortly after it came to light that Ukraine's military found an interesting use case for the Steam Deck.THQ Nordic is one of many game publishers that have been contributing to Ukraine relief efforts since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of the Eastern European country in February 2022. And while some companies like Humble Bundle have been raising money for Ukrainian charities, THQ Nordic opted for a more hands-on approach.RELATED: STALKER Cosplayers Killed After Russia Allegedly Mistakes Them For Ukraine SpiesThe Vienna, Austria-based publisher today detailed its last 15 months of humanitarian efforts centered on the war in Ukraine for the first time, revealing a number of ongoing initiatives intended to help ease some of the suffering resulting from the conflict. The central piece of this endeavor is a refugee housing program that saw THQ Nordic rent and furnish apartments for dozens of individuals displaced by the war, in addition to covering their utility and insurance bills, as well as negotiating their official refugee status with authorities. To date, 113 people received such direct support from THQ Nordic and its 15 European developers, the company revealed.

THQ Nordic has also been assisting Ukrainian refugees with language learning, job searches, and other challenges arising from starting a new life in a foreign country. Others received help with visa applications from the company before successfully relocating to Canada, Italy, Germany, or Sweden. To date, THQ Nordic invested the equivalent of some $535,000 in aiding Ukrainian war refugees, as per the publisher's official estimate. Since its humanitarian initiatives are geared toward working directly with the aided individuals, the publisher believes it managed to "avoid bureaucratic inefficiencies" and ensure all of that money went to a good cause.

Apart from detailing its ongoing relief efforts, THQ Nordic today condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which is something it already did alongside its parent, Embracer Group, in March 2022. The company also thanked all employees participating in its ongoing humanitarian initiatives.

The Russo-Ukrainian War has so far resulted in 42,000 civilian casualties, Fox News reported earlier this week, citing U.S. government officials. The same sources estimated that around 50,000 Russian military personnel and 20,000 Ukrainian forces have been killed in the conflict to date. Those figures also encompass some game creators, including a former STALKER developer and father of two who was killed fighting in Ukraine late last year.
