TimeSplitters fans have been waiting on news regarding a new game for some time, and a recent teaser made it seem like one was on the way. THQ has come forward and said that a recent TimeSplitters 2 Remake teaser was just a joke played on TimeSplitters fans, something that may not sit well with hopeful players.

Within the studio’s most recent release, a game called SpellForce 3: Fallen God, a purchasable copy of TimeSplitters 2 Remake can be found alongside a few other games from THQ. The item description for the in-game version of TimeSplitters 2 reads, “It’s finally coming! The iconic shooter, which has stood the test of time to join the era of modern games.” As one would expect, this tease quickly excited fans, but it has been confirmed that this was all just a joke.

With the in-game copy of TimeSplitters 2 found alongside the quietly-developed Biomutant and SpongeBob: Battle For Bikini Bottom Remastered, it was easy to see why fans got excited about its validity. However, a THQ Nordic spokesperson has since said, “The intention behind those Easter eggs was pure fun.” The spokesperson went on to say that when the developers are “ready to talk about TimeSplitters, they will make sure to get heard,” providing a shred of hope for fans.

A new TimeSplitters game has been in development since THQ Nordic acquired the rights to the franchise a few years back, but it seems like no official news will be coming for some time. However, with the co-creator of the franchise joining the development team in August of last year, fans may feel confident that the original feel of the series will be kept intact. Whether it is a sequel or a remake, TimeSplitters fans should have a game coming eventually.

Still, the joke is perhaps a bit harsh even with its playful intention, and it's hard to believe that THQ Nordic thought it could get by without fans reacting to the potential teaser. TimeSplitters fans are a dedicated bunch, with players even working on a fan-made game called TimeSplitters Rewind. Perhaps getting players talking about the series again was the intention, as THQ Nordic may want to see TimeSplitters get discussed among the gaming community before dropping any official news.

Regardless of whether the joke went too far, it has been made clear that it was not an actual tease. While some fans may be sad about TimeSplitters news still being far away, at least the trolling from THQ Nordic allows for plenty of TimeSplitters meme possibilities.
