Thor 5 is reportedly moving forward without Taika Waititi as director. Marvel Studios has reportedly set their eyes on a well-known Star Wars filmmaker they believe has the right stuff to give the character a new lease on life for his next theatrical appearance.

Thor's last solo appearance was less than stellar, as the consensus after it premiered was that Thor 4 squandered one of Marvel's most impactful stories, with the film’s plot receiving many negative reviews for its execution and tone. Despite this, Thor 5 is reportedly part of Marvel Studios' slate of upcoming projects, though it may divert from the humorous style Waititi infused into the franchise.

Following rumors that Chris Hemsworth's Thor 5 would move forward without Waititi, who served as director for the last two Thor films, Ragnarok and Love and Thunder, the filmmaker confirmed he was not helming any more entries in the franchise. Now, a new report claims a replacement for Waititi is rumored to have been shortlisted. According to trusted source Daniel Richtman via his Patreon account, the execs at Marvel Studios are eying Rogue One: A Star Wars Story director Gareth Edwards to helm Thor 5 because he’s done more series work. Furthermore, Marvel Studios is looking to give Thor 5 a noticeably darker tone than the light, humor-infused style that Waititi brought to the franchise.

Edwards, who most recently treated viewers to a reflection of current AI concerns with The Creator, is perhaps more commonly known for his work on 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. While the Star Wars franchise isn’t exactly dark in its tone, Rogue One's gripping atmosphere is a step in the right direction when contrasted with the MCU and Waititi's take on Thor. Edwards also has experience with writing and visual effects in genres that might give him the edge when bringing a more serious and thematically appropriate look and feel to a Thor film. Bad CGI has consistently been brought up around recent MCU projects, and having a knowing hand behind the wheel of Thor 5 might go a long way in ensuring that it isn’t one such project.

Since it’s been put forth that The Marvels could be the last traditional Marvel movie due to its less-than-encouraging performance, whoever directs Thor 5 will likely do so in an environment far different than the one Waititi worked in, with potentially more oversight and less creative freedoms afforded to them. Fans can only wait to see who gets the role and how they work under the pressures of rescuing the character within a fading MCU.

Thor 5 is reportedly in development at Marvel Studios.
