Highlights

  • The Marvels is a sequel to Captain Marvel and includes characters like Captain Rambeau and Kamala Khan, who have appeared in previous MCU projects.
  • Captain Rambeau's future in the MCU is teased in a mid-credits scene, suggesting she may become Captain Marvel in this universe or join the X-Men.
  • The movie hints at the formation of the Young Avengers and suggests that Captain Marvel's future may involve prequels or plot jumps rather than a direct sequel. Additionally, there is potential for a Nick Fury solo show and the return of the Skrulls in future projects.

The Marvels is a sequel to three projects. First, it is basically Captain Marvel 2, a sequel to the 2019 film in which Carol Danvers got her powers in the 90s. It also features Captain Rambeau, who was reintroduced in WandaVision, where she got her light-based powers as an adult. Finally, Kamala Khan makes her movie debut after appearing in her Disney+ show, Ms. Marvel.

That’s where the name comes into play: The Marvels. The three women get entangled in a plot wherein the Kree want to find a magic bracelet that will allow them to break barriers and steal the sun. It’s more than a little complicated, so let’s go over some plot details which will then inevitably lead to more MCU projects. There will be spoilers ahead.

6 Captain Rambeau’s Future

Is She Part Of The MCU X-Men Now?

Captain Rambeau in The Marvels

Captain Rambeau, or just Monica, has potentially the most enticing future in the MCU. There is no final stinger after the credits; instead, fans will have to be happy with a mid-credits scene. In this scene, Monica wakes up in a bed next to her mom watching. It’s not her real mom though, as it is implied that she could be this universe’s Captain Marvel, which has happened in the comics.

7 Powers You Didn't Know Ms. Marvel Has

Ms. Marvel possesses some surprising powers that even some veteran Marvel fans may have not known about.

The wildest thing is the appearance of Beast, aka Hank McCoy from the X-Men. He looks a bit different than he did in the original movie trilogy, but he is voiced by the same actor, Kelsey Grammer. So, is Monica going to join the X-Men on an adventure now? And if so, will that adventure be a movie, or will it be TV show on Disney+?

5 Ms. Marvel’s Future

The Young Avengers Are Forming

Ms. Marvel in The Marvels

The MCU has been hinting toward the Young Avengers for quite some time. The Marvels practically called it out in all but name. One of the final scenes in the movie shows Kate Bishop getting back to her apartment, where Ms. Marvel (aka Kamala Khan) is waiting.

It’s a bit reminiscent of Nick Fury trying to recruit members for his Avengers initiative, although Kamala is a bit more awkward. Is this when Kate and Kamala will be seen next? Or will there be second seasons of their respective shows first (Hawkeye and Ms. Marvel)? Also, who else will be in the Young Avengers?

4 Captain Marvel’s Next Adventure

Is It In The Past Or Future?

Captain Marve in The Marvels

Monica and Kamala have definitive futures, but the future of Captain Marvel (aka Carol Danvers) is a bit up in the air. At the end of the movie, she fixes the sun for the Kree, seemingly ending that dispute. She also moves to Louisiana in the hopes of one day reuniting with Monica. Things seem pretty relaxed for her.

8 Best MCU Movies For A Video Game Adaptation

From Ant-Man to Captain Marvel, there are countless MCU movies that deserve their own video game adaptation.

It doesn’t seem like there is a plan to use her in a Captain Marvel 3 movie, although there is the potential for Carol to return. The MCU could decide to fill in the gaps with plot jumps The Marvels made with Carol's character, and make a prequel. Her breaking into the Kree palace to destroy the AI is one thing a prequel could focus on, along with Carol’s marriage to Prince Yan of Aladna.

3 Nick Fury & SABER

Will There Be An Agents Of SABER Show?

Nick Fury in The Marvels

Nick Fury got his own show via Secret Invasion, which wasn’t critically loved by all. It focused on the remains of SHIELD, the Skrulls, and Fury’s past. While it didn’t strike a chord with everyone, that doesn’t mean Fury cannot get another solo show.

There could be a spiritual sequel to the Agents of SHIELD show, which has now been semi-booted out of the MCU. Fury could take control of a new group of agents and do interplanetary missions for SABER. Whether there is another Fury or solo SABER show on Disney+ remains to be seen, but assuredly both the character and organization will return to the MCU at some point.

2 The Skrulls

Will They Be In Thor 5?

Valkyrie talking to Captain Marvel in The Marvels

The Skrulls were set up in the first movie, Captain Marvel, and then got their big invasion storyline via the aforementioned Secret Invasion show. The Marvels points out that there are other Skrull populations out there, which Carol and the others save from the Kree in this movie. With their new home destroyed, the Skrulls are taken in by Valkyrie and the New Asgardians.

Are they going to make a return in the next Thor movie, or possibly a solo project that will focus on Valkyrie and New Asgard? Will they look like Skrulls, or will they take on human forms? Perhaps one of these Skrulls will take on the form of Thor himself. Whatever the case may be, it seems like the MCU isn’t done with this shapeshifting species yet.

1 An MCU Musical

Aladna Could Return

A dance scene on Aladna in The Marvels

On the planet of Aladna, everyone there sings to communicate. It’s a weird little musical number in The Marvels. It seemed a little out of place in the movie, but there are potential reasons for it. First of all, Brie Larson has shown her musical chops in movies before. For example, in Scott Pilgrim vs The World, she played the pop star Envy Adams.

In The Marvels, it’s made apparent that Carol is now a princess. She married Prince Yan in a previous adventure, and she even got a Disney Princess-like dress. Disney is known for creating musicals, and it seems like the time for an MCU musical is nigh. Will it focus on Aladna, or was this just a tease for some other MCU musical project?
