Warning: The following contains spoilers for The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic, Episode 4, "Rescue Team Member Usato!," now streaming on Crunchyroll.

Ken Usato has grown significantly stronger since his accidental summoning, though he still has ways to go before he can be ready for war. Unfortunately for him, war is right around the corner, and it’s only a matter of time before the Demon Lord’s army launches a full-scale assault on the Llinger Kingdom. However, Usato isn’t a lost cause considering his exponential growth in just a couple of weeks, and Rose is adamant about turning him into a one-man healing machine.

Rose’s methods of using healing in war initially seemed rather obscure, and Usato’s peculiar training kept viewers guessing. However, the latest episode of the Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic sheds light on the role of healers in war, revealing exactly how Rose intends on using Usato against the Demon Lord’s army.

The Llinger Kingdom’s Secret Weapon

Kidnappers in the Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic

The extent of the Demon Lord’s army currently remains a mystery, though viewers have been given a glimpse of some of their top ranks. One of these officials is the Third Army Commander of the Demon Lord’s army, a fierce she-devil that bears a grudge against the Llinger Kingdom. While her character is yet to be explored, she has revealed crucial information about the kingdom’s secret weapon, one that she utterly dreads.

Ironically, these fearful belligerents that have the Third Army Commander riled up are merely members of the Rescue Team, and she has dubbed them as “Kidnappers.” These Kidnappers are members of Rose’s rescue squad, and their job is to stand on the battlefield and carry injured soldiers to the back to receive healing. It seems that Rose’s methods of using healing magic are quite effective, seeing how the Demon Lord’s army considers them the most troublesome aspect of the Llinger Kingdom’s army.

Usato’s Role On the Battlefield

Ken Usato and Blurin

The notion of Kidnappers only alludes to the non-healing members of the Rescue Team, such as Tong and Mill. This leaves Usato’s role on the battlefield unspecified, although Rose has already assigned him to the Vanguard squad, meaning he will be present at the front lines. However, it seems that Rose wants Usato to adopt a healing style that is similar to hers, which would essentially involve healing soldiers on the spot immediately.

Usato’s training already hints at such a role, as his current training is to carry Blurin (his new animal companion) across the city while avoiding surprise attacks. This essentially means that Usato will be running around the battlefield and healing fallen allies on the spot, similar to Rose. However, Usato’s physical tenacity and healing powers are still at a novice level, meaning he still has a long way to go before he can stand beside Rose on the battlefield.

More Healers Enter the Scene

Usato and the New Healer

Rose had initially mentioned that there were two other healers in the Rescue Team, but they were stationed in a different place. The two healers have finally been revealed as a brother-sister duo that lives within the castle city. Despite being healers and working under Rose, their healing styles differ significantly, and their role within the Rescue Team is also different from Usato.

9 Isekai Anime & Manga With Protagonists Who Are Summoned By Accident

While a typical isekai protagonist is summoned to another world to be a hero, sometimes, a character is summoned by accident and must try to fit in.

Instead of being present on the battlefield, these two healers stay at the back end, healing injured allies brought to them by the Kidnappers. This dynamic further explains the need for non-healers in the Rescue Team, deeming Tong and the rest vital members of this crucial unit. This system is also sound and logical, as healers being present right in the middle of the battlefield would put the most crucial team in direct danger.

Usato Discovers an Unwavering Resolve

Ken Usato's Resolve

It’s no secret that Usato initially wanted to do nothing with the Rescue Team, yet he was sucked into this entire ordeal through Rose’s brute force. The same sentiments had persisted for the most part, but it seems that Usato has finally found his own purpose, leading to the first instance of Usato respecting Rose as his leader. After witnessing Suzune and Kazuki’s resolve and their training to fight the Demon Lord’s army, Usato promised to keep them safe and out of harm's way. Since they will be fighting at the front lines, Usato has made it a point to train harder and steel himself, ensuring he would be able to survive the front lines alongside them.

Before this moment, Usato had been training merely out of necessity, treating it as either a way to make himself useful or to avoid Rose’s wrath. Now, he has the conviction to fight alongside his friends to keep them out of death’s doors. It’s certainly a turning point not just for the Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic’s narrative but for Usato’s character development as well, showcasing how far he has come in just a couple of episodes.
