The World Ends With You is one of the most beloved cult classic titles Square Enix has ever released. Created by the team and artists behind the Kingdom Hearts franchise, The World Ends With You is a action RPG originally released for the Nintendo DS in 2007 which sees Neku Sakuraba, an anti-social teenage boy, and a slew of supporting characters as they fight for survival in an alternate version of Tokyo's Shibuya shopping district. While the game has never seen any sort of true follow-up, it has been re-released on iOS and Android and saw an enhanced re-release on Nintendo Switch in 2018 in the form of The World Ends With You: Final Remix, which added additional story content and a new epilogue, leaving many to speculate if Square Enix may be planning a sequel. That may be the case, if recent rumors are anything to go off.

The game's producer and character designer, Tetsuya Nomura, has never been shy about his desire to make a sequel to the Nintendo DS classic. With both these Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy 7 Remake behind him, it may finally be time that Tetsuya Nomura gets to work on a The World Ends With You sequel, especially if credible Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Square-Enix leaker, ResetEra user Tansut is to be believed.

Earlier this month, The Society for Promotion of Japanese Animation announced that this year's Anime Expo will be held digitally as an event called Anime Expo Lite. Shortly after, they revealed the first look at the poster for this year's event, which features characters from The World Ends With You. This lead ResetEra's Super Smash Bros. Ultimate downloadable content discussion thread to speculate if this was teasing the reveal of a character from The World Ends With You joining Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Replying to a user named "Garrod_Ran," Tansut commented:

While this lead many to speculate if Tansut was teasing that the game's protagonist Neku, would be joining Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, as they had previously correctly hinted at Final Fantasy 7's Cloud and Dragon Quest 11's Hero joining the series, Tansut later clarified that he was referring to a sequel. Tansut previously teased the possibility of a sequel last October when he commented "Would the world end with you all if someone were to directly leak something in this thread? It can wait until next year if that’s the case, and it’s not like it only would be relevant to just this console eventually anyway.”

This adds to the mounting possibility that The World Ends With You will likely see some sort of sequel announcement at this year's Anime Expo Lite event, which will take place on July 3rd and 4th 2020.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix is out now, exclusively on Nintendo Switch.
