The Witcher: Path of Destiny is a recently announced board game set in the Witcher universe. It is the second major adaptation of the franchise following the Witcher Netflix series, but this one is the first to be directly tied to the games.

Developed by CD Projekt Red, The Witcher's video game series has taken off in popularity since it first launched in 2007, with a story based on the Polish book series of the same name while also being a non-canon sequel to that franchise. The series is known for its stellar action RPG gameplay across its three (soon to be four) main installments, but thanks to its seven spin-offs, a multitude of other genres has been tackled. And given a recent announcement by the series' developers, it seems the franchise is primed to tap into yet another market.

As reported by IGN, a new fantasy board game is in the works, going by the name of The Witcher: Path of Destiny. It revolves around up to five players retelling iconic stories from throughout the Witcher universe as they navigate the five game boards. They'll have the option to either follow the stories closely, utilizing their character-specific abilities in order to do so, or divert from the pathway if they so choose, with only one player coming out as a hero at the end of the 45-90-minute journey. The story is reported to be rather dark and closely supervised by CD Projekt Red to ensure its lore is accurate. The five protagonists are set to include Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer alongside other heroes of the Continent, and the complex gameplay is set to boast a strong emphasis on strategy.

Much like The Witcher 3 before it, alongside several other AAA games in recent years, Path of Destiny is primed to launch in two separate editions. Both will include five game boards and game pieces (with the Deluxe Pledge version including full 3D models instead of standees, and multi-layered boards), small and large cards, cardboard tokens, a neoprene playmat, and of course, a rulebook among other parts. The game is intended for players aged 14 and up, and currently has no set release date, but it is reportedly being helmed via a crowdfunding effort.

Between this board game and the recently announced Witcher remake, now seems to be a very good time to be a Witcher fan. Only time will tell if Path of Destiny will meet its stretch goals, but if it does, it should no doubt be as enjoyable as the remake, as well as the upcoming fourth installment, albeit in its own way.

The crowdfunding campaign for The Witcher: Path of Destiny will last from October 9 to November 7, 2023.
