  • Project Sirius faced setbacks in development, leading to layoffs, but is back on track and can now focus on innovative features, with a clan system feeling like an obvious home run. Instead of traditional clans, players could make their own Witcher Schools.
  • Custom Witcher Schools could play a major role in the upcoming multiplayer game, allowing players to create their own unique lore, abilities, and armor styles.

CD Projekt Red has several of games currently in development, the vast majority of which were announced all together during the studio's October 2022 financial meeting. Though a few things have changed since that initial meeting, most of these projects remain in active development, including Project Polaris, the next mainline Witcher title, Project Canis Majoris, a remake of the first Witcher game, and Project Sirius, a Witcher title that's set to have a strong focus on co-op multiplayer.

Back in March of last year, Project Sirius ran into a major development issue, with CD Projekt Red inferring that the game essentially needed to be restarted in order to find a better "framework." But thankfully, as of May 2023, Project Sirius is back on track, though unfortunately it resulted in some major layoffs for the multiplayer game's developer, The Molasses Flood. But hopefully, things are now looking up for the Witcher multiplayer game, and it can start shifting focus from the game's general structure to some innovative features that would embrace its multiplayer premise, with one in particular already having an obvious direction to go in: a clan system.

Witcher Schools Are a Prominent Part of the Lore

According to The Witcher's deep lore, the Order of Witchers was established in the 10th century as a result of the kings of the time wanting a powerful army of magic-wielding soldiers capable of slaying the kingdoms' most violent threats. After undergoing a series of extreme mutations, these soldiers were deemed failures by the monarchs, only being able to wield minor magic. With the kings turning their backs on the Witchers, the order began to splinter into various factions, thus leading to an array of different Witcher Schools.

Currently, there are seven Witcher Schools confirmed to be canon, each one modelling itself after a different animal, in terms of outfit design, mentality, and training. The School of the Wolf is undoubtedly the most well-known among Witcher fans, with it being the home of series protagonist Geralt of Rivia. The School of the Wolf was renowned for its swordsmanship, devising a technique known as the Temerian Devil which allowed Witchers to take down armored enemies with ease. The School of the Wolf also taught its students how to parry crossbow bolts.

Every Witcher school has its own unique quirks, and the School of the Bear is a great example of that. Unlike the School of the Wolf that would often team up with fellow Witchers to complete more difficult contracts, the School of the Bear prefers to hunt completely alone, and that's a characteristic that's baked into the school's training, with young Bear Witchers having to climb a mountain to finish their training - a trial that would cause many young Witchers to freeze to their death.

How Custom Witcher Schools Could Work in a Multiplayer Game

While a few Witcher Schools have cropped up in the Witcher game series, fans have never really gotten to see the Order in its heyday, as by the time of the Witcher series the vast majority of schools have been destroyed by humans who deemed them to be an even worse evil than the monsters they were slaying. That being said, it would be great to see the upcoming Witcher multiplayer game bring back Witcher Schools in full-force, and go above and beyond by letting players create their very own.

When booting up Project Sirius for the first time, players should be able to create their own Witcher School logo, choosing from hundreds of different animals to use as the primary icon. The player's chosen animal should then dictate the visual style of the armor they start the game with, and possibly even the player's starting weapons. From there, players should be able to choose a unique ability for their custom Witcher School, forging their own lore behind why their school would be adept in that certain skill. They could then invite their friends to join their school, forging their own lore for the school through the things they do together. To random players, this wouldn't change the game too much, but it would go a long way in fulfilling some Witcher fans' dreams.
