Beginners and returning players alike can play the brand new In the Eternal Fire’s Shadow side quest rather early on in the story. The game recommends Geralt to be around level 15 when starting this new content as the final encounter with a strong new enemy type can punish under leveled Witchers. Players can follow this guide to find this new side quest and the Netflix Witcher gear.

Go To The Devil's Pit

map-dlc-location-witcher

Players do not receive this new quest in their logs automatically like other DLC. They must find the Devil's Pit location to the southeast of the Hanged Man's Tree in Velen. Players should already have the Hanged Man's Tree fast travel on their map as this is the starting point in Velen once they have completed the prologue in White Orchard. Look on the map for a circular shape to the east of Mulbrydale if that fast travel marker has been acquired. Players should see an exclamation point on their map and mini-map indicating a new quest is available.

Speak To The Deacon

priest-witcher-3

Geralt will meet a young priest of the Eternal Fire on the side of the road. The deacon explains the dire situation in the Devil's Pit with deserting soldiers trying to break into the old mine and potentially releasing the unspeakable horrors held within. Geralt can negotiate his pay for this quest similar to standard Witcher Contracts. The deacon will be angered by asking for upwards of 270 gold so settle for something in the 230-250 range.

Defeat The Deserters

devils-pit-witcher

Players must descend into the Devil's Pit and fight off a group of level 9 deserters. These are rather standard enemies and can be handily dispatched by the player. Fans should bring Hanged Man's venom for the steel sword and abuse the Axii sign if they find themselves struggling with these soldiers. There is no time limit enforced here, so players can always leave and level up to come back later if need be as the final enemy encounter will be more powerful than these enemies.

Enter The Mine

witcher-cave-pit

Once players have taken out all the deserters they must enter the doors into the dark caves of the Devil's Pit. A note left by the Witcher Reinald sets a sullen scene. It appears that the Order of the Eternal Fire left plague victims in the cave to die. A voice will guide the player downwards.

Explore The Mine

The voice will draw players to a crossroads. Once Geralt reaches a certain point on the path to the right the optional objective to explore the mine will appear on the HUD. Players can continue forward and ignore this objective, but it is better to turn back while ignoring the taunting voice, and head down the path on the left. Exploring the mine is rather straightforward and will prepare Geralt for the upcoming battle. When using Witcher Senses the player will be guided to most points of interest in the cave by Wolf School symbols similar to Geralt's medallion. Searching down this passage also doles out more story through various notes left behind.

Players can also use the Magic Lamp from Keira Metz's storyline wherever there is a green glow in the air to view ghosts in this area. There are a few Plague Victim enemies scattered throughout, and they fight like more powerful regular human enemies. Once players reach the end of the cave there is a door that can be destroyed by the Aard spell.

Brew Reinald's Philter

philter-witcher-ingredients

Players are rewarded for exploring the cave with the Red Miasmal entry in their bestiary along with the recipe for Reinald's Philter. This potion requires these ingredients.

  • 4x Celandine
  • 1x Dwarven Spirit
  • Reinald's Content

Celandine and Dwarven Spirit are rather common alchemy items, but if they are needed the player can find them at most herbalists or innkeeps. Reinald's Content is received for reaching the recipe and is already given to the player. Once the potion is brewed it will not be in the potion section of Geralt's inventory so do not worry about drinking it manually.

Battle Possessed Reinard And The Red Miasmal

red-miasmal-witcher

With the potion brewed, players must now head back to the fork in the cave and head to the right to find Reinald the Witcher trapped on the cave wall. Use the Aard spell to free him. He will ask for the potion that has just been brewed. The player should not give it to him as it will only serve to take away the potential buffs it will give you during the ensuing fight. If the players refuse, Geralt will drink the potion on his own during the cutscene. Possessed Reinard is a simple fight save for his Quen spell that block Geralt's attacks. Simply back off and wait for his red shielding to disappear before engaging again.

He can be stunned by a combination of Yrden and Aard spells. Once he is defeated the Red Miasmal will reveal itself. This large enemy hits hard, but has relatively few attacks. When up close it will swing at Geralt and at a distance it launches a ranged attack. Players should stay up close to avoid this. Once the Miasmal is at half of it's health it will teleport and spawn more Plague Victims. It will continue to do so for the rest of the fight if the player does not end it quickly.

Receive The Forgotten Wolf Diagrams

netflix-witcher-armor-wolf

Once the Red miasmal is defeated, Geralt will comment on the strange Witcher armor and be confronted by the spirit of Reinald. Reinald offers the Forgotten Wolf Diagrams and Geralt receives them automatically through the conversation.

Ending Choices

priest-choices-witcher

This sidequest has multiple outcomes just like most of the Witcher 3's stories do. Reinald will ask to see the priest who gave Geralt the contract. Refusing him will end the quest. Geralt will receive payment from the deacon, and he will stay in the Order of the Eternal Fire. Accepting this request brings him to the cave where Reinald will confront him. If the player wants the happier ending they should make these choices.

  • Boy's innocent.
  • Don't need a church to do good, priest.

If the player wants the bleaker ending which results in Geralt not even geting paid by the priest for his actions choose these dialogue options.

  • Reinald's right.
  • Crimes like these can't be forgiven.

Pick Up The Osmund's Notes In Kaer Morhen

notes-witcher-armor

Regardless of the endings that players see through they will receive the Forgotten Wolf Diagrams and the Scavenger Hunt: Forgotten Wolf Treasure Hunt in their quest log. Unlike other armor scavenger hunts players only need to have completed the Ugly Baby quest to return to Kaer Morhen. Once inside the front of the Witcher castle players must climb a ladder and find the notes on a bookshelf to be able to craft the armor and swords at the master smithing locations.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
