While players are accustomed to the numerous features that The Witcher 3 offers, there is a lot more that said players know little to nothing about. For instance, players are still unsure how the dyeing mechanic works in the third installment of The Witcher franchise. Fortunately, this guide will cover everything from how to obtain dyes and how to dye armor.

Types Of Dyes In The Witcher 3

While finding dyes is difficult and requires completing quests, looting, and killing enemies, they can be crafted via alchemy. However, diagrams are required for each color to be able to dye armor.

Players can only dye armor if they own the Blood and Wine DLC. Dye diagrams will only become accessible once players get to Toussaint.

Fortunately, most armor dyes can also be bought from a dye merchant located south of Beauclair Port near the lake. The merchant sells dyes and dye removers, but they are limited in quantity and cost quite a bit.

The following dye diagrams can be obtained in Toussaint from the following locations:

  • Yellow Dye

The yellow dye formula can be obtained from the cemetery in Beauclair. The formula can be looted from a crypt west of the Metinna Gate in a narrow corridor that follows the main chamber.

  • Black Dye

The black dye can be found in the ruins of a castle northwest of Toussaint.

  • Turquoise Dye

The turquoise dye formula is located in a small sack behind a white tent in a camp northwest of the Arthach Palace Ruins.

  • Green Dye

The green dye formula is located in a chest in the ruins of Fort Ussar.

  • Red Dye

The red dye formula is located in a strongbox on a table in a cave. The cave can be found northeast of Dun Tynne Crossroads after following the road east and crossing a stream.

  • Orange Dye

The orange dye formula can be found in a wooden cart in a ditch before a bridge east of Coronata Vineyard.

  • Gray Dye

The gray dye formula can be obtained during the contract: A Knight’s Tale. The contract can be initiated from the notice board located in Castel Ravello Vineyard.

  • White Dye

The white dye formula is located in a strongbox in Mont Crane Castle.

  • Brown Dye

The brown dye formula is located in a monster den northwest of Fox Hollow.

  • Pink Dye

The pink dye formula is located in a secret room in a Hansa Stronghold northeast of Beauclair in Mont Crane Castle.

  • Purple Dye

The purple dye formula can be obtained during The Tufo Monster contract. The contract can be initiated from the notice board located in Flovive.

  • Blue Dye

The blue dye formula is located in a wooden chest under a boat in water southwest of the Belgaard Vineyard.

How To Dye Armor In Witcher 3

After acquiring an armor dye, players can change the color of Witcher armor from the inventory. Choose the appropriate dye and select the piece of armor to change the color.

Armor dyes can only be used once and can only be reverted to their original color by using a dye remover, which can be purchased from a dye merchant.

Armor dye can only be applied to Witcher gear and not just any armor.

The Witcher 3 is available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, and Nintendo Switch.
