One such unsettling finding was posted to Reddit by a user named Mikelom88 when they found a bone-chilling Skellige Ghost ship while sailing throughout the tiny islands located between An Skellig and Hindarsfjall at around 12:30 a.m. in-game time. The legendary ghost ship that can be found in Skellige is named The Flying Redanian according to the flavor text of a card found in GWENT: The Witcher Card Game. According to lore, an ancient Redanian crew once found a massive treasure, which caused unending disputes among them that made the crew doomed to forever dispute over how best to split the spoils.

The hair-raising ghost ship found in Witcher 3 is actually a reference to another real-life legendary myth, The Flying Dutchman. Allegedly, The Flying Dutchman was a phantom ship doomed to spend eternity at sea, with its ethereal crew desperately trying to contact any living person who might notice it. The folk tale is believed to have originated in the 18th century, with numerous reported sightings in the 19th and 20th centuries. While the mythos is certainly a compelling one, the widely accepted theory suggests that the haunted ship is, in fact, nothing more than an optical illusion created by specific weather conditions.

Witcher 3 is not the only video game that features supernatural encounters as many other titles delve into the realm of the myth. Seasoned gamers may nostalgicly reminisce about titles like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, where the pursuit of myths and mysteries was a popular activity among many gamers and YouTubers. Incorporating an element of mystery can often be exactly what a game needs to sprinkle some flavor and intrigue into its universe.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
