Geralt will collect many items in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. These items can be used for crafting new armor pieces, alchemy ingredients, and more. However, Geralt collects more than his fair share of junk in his travels.

Some pieces of junk can be sold for a small profit, and others can be broken down to their base properties and reused to craft new weapons, armor, potions, and other items. For players to break down Geralt's junk in The Witcher 3, it needs to get dismantled.

How To Dismantle Junk In The Witcher 3

Dismantling isn't just good for getting rid of Geralt's junk, but it works for old weapons, armor, and quest items that are no longer useful. Thankfully, the game makes it impossible to dismantle things needed to complete quests in The Witcher 3. To use the dismantle mechanic, players need to use the following instructions:

  • Speak to a blacksmith or an armorer.
  • Armorers and blacksmiths are found in towns and villages and have an anvil symbol representing their location on the map.

  • Ask them to craft something for Geralt.
  • Press R1/RB to access the Dismantle option.

  • Select the items that need breaking down and pay the required amount to dismantle them.
  • The broken-down items can now be used to craft new gear, clothes, weapons, and potions. Or the ingredients and materials can be sold for a profit.

Valuable Items To Dismantle

Just because an item is labeled as junk in Geralt's inventory, it doesn't mean that it's useless or a cheap trinket that can't be sold for a significant amount. Gold rings, for example, can be sold for around 200 coins. So it's worth checking whether something is worth destroying or selling for a profit in The Witcher 3.

Selling basic items to Innkeepers can yield more gold than selling items back to blacksmiths and armorers. Rare ore will reap a profit with a craftsman etc. In addition, herbs and alchemy ingredients will sell for a profit at herbalist shops. So be mindful of where Geralt is selling his goods.

Price Differences

When dismantling items in The Witcher 3, players will notice that The Witcher 3's blacksmiths and armorers can have different prices based on location. The craftsmen in cities are usually more expensive than those found in villages. However, the quality of goods extracted from items can depend on how good the blacksmith/armorer is at their job. The master blacksmith found in Crows Perch is better at dismantling and crafting rare weapons etc.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available now for the PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One. The PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions are set to launch in December 2022.
