The next-gen update for TheWitcher 3: Wild Hunt launched on December 14, 2022, bringing fresh life to CD Projekt Red's hit RPG. The Witcher 3 has often been praised for its epic story, which follows Geralt of Rivia as he searches for his adopted daughter Ciri.

During the game's first Act, Geralt learns about Ciri's adventures from Philip Strenger, the Bloody Baron. These flashback scenes will allow players to take control of Ciri, as Strenger recounts her escape from the Crones of Crookback Bog, including her rescue of the little girl Gretka, and her defeat of a werewolf called the King of Wolves.

Identifying the King of Wolves in Witcher 3

Witcher 3 Ciri identifying Yaren

Players can give themselves a major advantage in the King of Wolves Witcher 3 boss fight by correctly identifying what type of creature he is in the previous scene. Before players meet the King of Wolves, they'll encounter the body of one of his victims and get a chance to examine it. Inspecting the chest, legs, and belly will cause Ciri to conclude that the King is a werewolf. This will allow players to craft an oil to boost her attacks against him.

If players fail to fully examine the body, Ciri will instead craft an oil that's only effective against Fiends. This oil will cause the King of Wolves to grow stronger when he is damaged by it, making the boss fight much harder. However, if players have crafted the correct oil, then they'll find their attacks deal bonus damage when the real battle begins.

How to Defeat The King of Wolves in Witcher 3

As players will be controlling Ciri during her encounter with the King of Wolves, they won't have access to Geralt's Signs, Skills, or Potions. Instead, they can only use Ciri's basic attack combos, as well as her unique phasing-dodge move.

Along with using the correct oil, Ciri's dodge is the key to beating the King of Wolves boss fight, as it will allow players to evade his powerful attacks. Dodging directly through the King is the safest tactic, allowing Ciri to get in one or two quick strikes before he can turn and engage her again. However, dodging away is also a viable tactic, as the range of Ciri's phasing will allow her to escape any of the King's claw or bite attacks.

If players back up too far, the King will attempt a charge to close the distance. In this case, simply dodge to the side, or forward at the last moment, in order to avoid the damage. With good timing, and a boost from identifying the King of Wolves, players should be able to take down the beast and continue Ciri's story.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One with PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions launching December 14.
