The Walking Dead's Daryl Dixon spinoff featuring Norman Reedus will tell a new story. Director and executive producer Greg Nicotero promised this to fans in the face of franchise fatigue.

Although The Walking Dead's ratings dropped towards the end of its 11-season run, the show still commands a die-hard fanbase. The Walking Dead's popularity has already spawned three spinoff shows: Fear the Walking Dead, Tales of the Walking Dead, and The Walking Dead: World Beyond. If fans were worried about getting their zombie fix, AMC announced three new spinoffs starring some of the franchise’s most beloved characters. These spinoffs include Dead City, an unnamed series starring Rick and Michonne, and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.

With so many seasons of The Walking Dead content, many worry that fans will burn out and lose their taste for zombie storytelling. However, Nicotero promises fans are in for something they haven’t seen before within The Walking Dead universe. The show is being hailed as the closest to a standalone show any spinoffs get. "The goal isn't just to see Daryl in exotic and new locations, but to explore a wholly different world," Nicotero said to Entertainment Weekly.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon sees arguably the show’s most popular character mysteriously wash ashore in France. The new show will follow Daryl as he tries to learn how he ended up in Europe, with actor Reedus hinting that he didn’t get there voluntarily. Daryl struggles to find a way back to America, but the relationships he develops with the resilient French survivors hamper his plans.

The formula of moving the location of The Walking Dead may seem familiar because fans have seen it before. Fans have watched tales of survival set in the woods of Georgia, a Nebraskan university, the sunny streets of Los Angeles and Mexico, and several other locations. Although fans may have initially rolled their eyes at what seems to be the latest attempt to continue the Walking Dead franchise by changing a minor detail like the setting, Nicotero promises that’s not the case.

While it remains to be seen if Nicotero, Reedus, and the rest of the Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon crew can make good on the promise of rejuvenated content, many fans are hopeful. Nicotero has drawn on Robert Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange World to shape Daryl's exploration of apocalyptic France, which may give the series the freshness it hopes to bring to the franchise.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon will premiere in the fall of 2023.
