Minecraft has become incredibly popular over the years for the creative freedom it gives its players, as well as its replayability and consistent patches. While Minecraft has seen various changes since it launched, it continues to lean heavily on sandbox elements combined with exploration. Though the game has a massive player base, there are some guidelines that can be helpful for those just picking up the game.
Many of these rules will pertain to surviving in Minecraft, but there's also quite a few general rules of thumb. Of course, the universe of Minecraft is incredibly vast, and every player will have their own style that works for them. However, following these unwritten rules could either save a player's life or preserve valuable resources.
Don't Use Diamonds on a Hoe
While there is an option to craft a diamond hoe in Minecraft, it doesn't necessarily mean that people should do it. Diamonds are a precious ore in this game and the only benefit of creating a tool of this caliber is it will last longer. Diamond hoes won't give an attack boost, nor will they function better than a normal hoe. It's almost so pointless to make that the Minecraft community has created several memes dedicated to the tool, jokingly stating that using a diamond hoe while farming is "the ultimate flex."
Never Dig Straight Down
It's well known in the community that people should never dig straight down or straight up. It's common to run into lava, explosions, or holes that would be otherwise avoidable if players opted to dig diagonally. Fall damage is no joke, so exploring Minecraft caves and digging underground needs to be done safely. However, if players do find themselves falling a great distance or into lava, carrying a water bucket may make the difference between life and death.
Cover Creeper Holes
Creepers are one of the most common mobs in Minecraft, purely because they can deal a great deal of damage to players and structures. Since these green creatures explode at random, they often leave behind holes. People in a shared server would likely appreciate it if others covered these unaesthetic craters, especially if a Creeper was following someone when it blew up. Always remember to cover holes in the dirt with dirt.
Place Torches On the Right Side of the Caves
When exploring dark areas like mine shafts or caves, torches are a necessity. Minecraft mobs frequent dark areas, so players should try to establish a light source. Torches are also one of the first things players can craft from the start because they only require a single charcoal and a stick. As such, torches should be placed on the right side of a cave because it makes it easier to keep track of where the exit is.
Crouch When Going Through Portals
Portals in Minecraft can be used to travel in or out of The Nether or The End. Unfortunately, some people might make the mistake of walking through a portal without being crouched. Portals place people randomly in The Nether or in The End, and as such, it could spawn someone at the edge of an abyss. If a person doesn't want to lose many of their hard-earned assets, crouching to slow their movement could save their lives as they get a sense of their surroundings.
Minecraft is so diverse that a list of unwritten rules could be nearly endless. For example, one should always carry food, a sword, a pickaxe, and a crafting table. Additionally, creating a respawn point with a bed is incredibly important. In the end, the best way to play Minecraft is to find the style that fits someone best and go from there.
