Neil Gaiman responds to a fan question that offers much-needed clarity surrounding The Sandman season 2 and where Netflix is in the production process for the highly anticipated DC comic book series.
The Sandman was renewed for season 2 at Netflix, which was the spark that ignited Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav's discontent with Netflix's payment structure since the DC IP is being leased to Netflix by the studio. However, this does not seem to have impacted The Sandman production, as Gaiman offers an exciting update for a fan who reached out to the writer.
Netflix's The Sandman does a lot right and was praised for its worthy adaptation, so fans wondered what the status is for season 2. As a result of building curiosity, a fan reached out in a pleasant Tumblr message that started by asking the writer how their day was and then proceeded to ask Gaiman if there was any news regarding The Sandman season 2 production, as the fan indicated that the fan-base has not heard of any updates for a while. Gaiman responded with a straightforward response expressing that the script has already been written, the sets are being designed, and they are currently casting for the first episode they will be shooting. Pre-production is underway, despite not having this information come out through media outlets. So, it makes sense that Gaiman would want to speak plainly on how season 2 is developing, especially after completing the script and feeling good about how it is proceeding.
For fans waiting for the next season of The Sandman, there are many other Neil Gaiman adaptations to check out. Dead Boy Detective is also worth mentioning, as it is another Gaiman DC IP that Warner Bros. Discovery has leased to Netflix, even though it was previously planned to release on HBO Max. So, The Sandman is not the end for what other stories can be adapted. This comes amid fans campaigning for the Snyderverse DC storyline to be restored on Netflix, as it was expressed that Warner Bros. Discovery would want to lease more DC IPs to third-party streaming services as part of its business strategy. However, with Zaslav not being happy with the payment structure at Netflix, how that and other DC IPs might proceed is up in the air.
Previously, there was uncertainty about how The Sandman would continue at Netflix, with speculation on if the potential second season would even be called season 2. However, with Gaiman completing the script, the pieces are well underway in what should be another exciting entry into The Sandman's collection of stories.
