After a successful first season, news from someone closely involved with the production of The Sandman TV series on Netflix has given rise to the possibility of a second season. This news comes shortly after Netflix released a special two-part story collection following the conclusion of the first season.

Based on the award-winning '90s comic book series of the same name by legendary comic book writer Neil Gaiman, The Sandman tells the story of Morpheus, the incarnation and master of dreams and the Sandman of legend, which is where the series gets its title. He is also known as Dream of the Endless, a group of seven beings unimaginably older and more powerful than any others, each with dominion over different natural forces. In the show’s first season, Morpheus escapes more than a century of captivity resulting from an occult ritual and must set about taking charge of his realm, The Dreaming, once more. The season was a major critical success, with many wondering why The Sandman adaptation took so long.

In an interview with ScreenRant, the stellar adaptation’s visual effects supervisor Ian Markiewicz, who helped create one of the best portrayals of Lucifer in recent times, revealed that the crew was preparing for another season's production despite not yet having any confirmation from higher-ups. “We have a really wonderful framework for what we think season 2 looks like. Allan is still touching up scripts and reworking things, but we have an arc," Markiewicz said. 'Up until pretty recently, I think maybe even two weeks or so, Gary, our production designer, myself and Allan meet over lunch, and we will do a script over that meeting.”

He went on to describe the behind-the-scenes process in some detail, then confirmed that everything was already underway. “That process is happening now, which is great, and it's really fun and exciting to be able to sort of have season 1 and behind us to know what we feel worked there, things that we wanted to sort of finesse further, and how that impacts our approach for season 2.” Fans of the show can relate to the sentiment, with the first season of The Sandman employing only appropriately minor modifications to the source material and making it work for everyone.

This confident approach to the wait for a second season is a good indicator of the show’s chances for renewal, with Netflix accidentally sharing some interesting The Sandman footage that suggests a second season might be on the table. The writers are certainly not lacking source material to pull from for future seasons, and the feedback from fans proves that they’re on the right track with what could have easily been a tricky adaptation to pull off.

Despite the team staying true to the source material and Gaiman's vision, some people have accused the show of ‘going woke’ when the casting information was released, even though the Sandman comics have always been progressive in intent, and many of the complaints were simply invalid when scrutinized by anyone who had read the source material. Fortunately, this small segment of Gaiman's fanbase can’t drown out the larger, more well-informed fans.
