Until Dawn by Supermassive Games earned a great deal of praise when it launched in 2015, and the studio has made many similar games since then, most notably The Dark Pictures anthology. But while The Dark Pictures games are similar to Until Dawn, Supermassive is now making a proper spiritual successor to the hit game with The Quarry, a new narrative-driven horror game starring David Arquette and a number of other notable actors.
Supermassive first teased The Quarry with a brief trailer that helped set up the premise, and has since released a longer trailer that gives fans a much better idea of what to expect from the game. In The Quarry, set to launch on June 10, players will take control of nine different teenage camp counselors as they attempt to survive against a hostile threat that's trying to kill them. The exact nature of this threat is not revealed by the trailer, so it seems fans will have to wait to play the game for themselves to find out more.
Unlike The Dark Pictures games, which are relatively short experiences, The Quarry's scale will be more in line with Until Dawn. And like Until Dawn, it's going for a teen-slasher vibe, as opposed to the more experimental stories seen in the Dark Pictures games.
That being said, The Quarry will still retain some innovations from The Dark Pictures games, like support for co-op play. Up to eight players can go through The Quarry together, voting on important decisions and watching how the story plays out. There's online play as well as couch co-op, with players able to each select their own counselor and control their actions directly. Not only that, but The Quarry will have a Movie Mode that lets players simply watch the game as though it were an actual movie.
Like Supermassive's other games, The Quarry features Hollywood talent in its cast, with David Arquette, Ariel Winter, Brenda Song, Evan Evagora, Halston Sage, Justice Smith, Miles Robbins, Siobhan Williams, Skyler Gisondo, Zach Tinker, Ethan Suplee, Grace Zabriskie, Lance Henriksen, Lin Shaye, and Ted Raimi all confirmed to be a part of the game's cast so far.
Fans of The Dark Pictures games may be worried that Supermassive is setting that series aside for The Quarry, but those fears would be unfounded. The Dark Pictures: The Devil in Me has already been announced, and even more Dark Pictures games are expected to release down the road as well.
The Quarry launches June 10 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
