Developer Supermassive Games hasn't been shy about taking inspiration from classic horror eras for some of its games, and new free DLC coming to The Quarry appears to lean further into these inspirations. Since releasing in June, the studio has only put out costume DLC leaning into its 80s inspirations as the studio builds to the release of The Dark Pictures Anthology's next game, The Devil In Me. This is set to change, for a short period of time, with free DLC for players who want to feel like they're in a 1950s horror film.

Much like Supermassive's games The Dark Pictures Anthology and Until Dawn, The Quarry is an interactive horror game where the player's actions determine who ultimately lives and dies over the course of the game. The Quarry, specifically, follows a group of camp counselors in the fictional Hackett's Quarry summer camp who find themselves stuck at the camp for one final night and decide to make the most of it. However, the fun night quickly turns to terror as the group finds themselves stuck between the supernatural terrors and violent residents of Hackett's Quarry, and the counselors must rely on their wits and each other to survive the night.

Supermassive was upfront about horror inspiration in The Quarry such as Evil Dead, Psycho, and Friday the 13th, effectively dropping players into their own interactive horror film from the 50s or 80s. The limited-time free DLC will lean further into this idea with a new costume pack to make players feel like they are playing a modern version of the Creature from the Black Lagoon or The Thing. It will be free to players until November 1st, acting as a Halloween surprise from the developers, but it can still be bought afterward for $4.99.

Given the 80s-inspired outfits added to the game in its July 2022 update, some players may not be surprised Supermassive added additional outfits to lean into the game's inspirations. The 1950s, specifically, is full of "creature features" which the studio looked to when crafting The Quarry to have it fall closer in line with Until Dawn than The Dark Pictures Anthology. A set of outfits channeling 50s stars including James Dean and Shirley MacLaine allow players to further channel that idea into the game.

It remains to be seen, though, if Supermassive will make any additional content for The Quarry before the final Dark Pictures game for its first season releases. On top of that, game director Will Byles has previously spoken about the studio's next big horror title, saying it will be in the same mold as Until Dawn and The Quarry but may move away from the teen horror sub-genre. His statements seemingly hint that Supermassive may already be in the early stages of this next game, and with more Dark Anthology titles potentially down the road, it may not leave much room for additional content for The Quarry.

The Quarry is currently available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
