Supermassive Games rose to fame with its narrative-driven horror game Until Dawn, which quickly became a hit with horror fans. Essentially a playable slasher movie, Supermassive Games has followed up Until Dawn with its Dark Pictures Anthology games, but its next project is a proper spiritual successor to the game that put it on the map. The Quarry is a new horror game inspired by Until Dawn and slasher movies, where player choice will have a major impact on the story.

The Quarry, like Until Dawn before it, will put players in charge of a cast of slasher movie characters. Player choice will determine who lives, who dies, how they die, and other major plot points. There are a lot of variables to take into account when it comes to The Quarry and its branching narrative paths, to the point where the game reportedly features nearly 200 endings in total.

The Quarry game director Will Byles told IGN that The Quarry has a total of 186 different endings depending on the choices players make in the game. Now, that's not to say that all of those endings are going to be drastically different from one another. On the contrary, it's likely that there may only be slight differences between certain endings. However, since all nine main characters in The Quarry can die, there should still be plenty of variety.

On the flip side, all characters in The Quarry can also survive the events of the game, which needs to be taken into account as well. According to Byles, The Quarry script is over 1,000 pages, which is about 10x bigger than TV and film projects, so there's going to be a lot of narrative possibilities, to say the least. On paper, it sounds like The Quarry is taking Until Dawn's branching narratives to the next level, though fans will need to wait and see how it works in practice.

The Quarry has an impressive cast, with the likes of David Arquette, Ariel Winter, Brenda Song, and many others all set to be featured in the game. The title has horror movie icon Lin Shaye in the mix as well, so the final product stands a good shot of meeting fan expectations when it launches in June.

Those who are more interested in Supermassive's Dark Pictures games have something to look forward to later this year as well. Even though The Quarry is launching in June, Supermassive still plans on putting out The Dark Pictures: The Devil in Me at some point later in 2022.

The Quarry launches June 10 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
