TheMatrix Resurrections picks up right where the original trilogy left off and will bring back many familiar faces. Now, Warner Bros. has released the second official trailer for The Matrix 4, and it's full of action and hints about the mysterious story.

This is the second official trailer for The Matrix Resurrections, and the three-minute preview offers up a lot more of the story along with the fight scenes. The upcoming sequel will also tie heavily into the original, as fans can see that footage from the first three Matrix films was played back-to-back alongside the new scenes from the fourth movie.

The new Matrix Resurrections trailer showed off a lot of action scenes and locations that the characters will visit. There's a dojo fight, an underground fistfight between Neo and Agent Johnson, a big brawl on a moving train, a rooftop battle involving a helicopter, a motorcycle chase scene, and, of course, a huge action-packed gunfight. The film looks to top the action of the first three Matrix installments, which is really saying something because those movies thrived on the action set pieces while also serving as a social commentary on technology and society.

Pairing the old and new footage back-to-back teases that the plot will lean heavily on the "deja vu" theme. The Matrix films have always touched on this concept and in the new trailer shows how things feel the same but clearly aren't. The first obvious example is the appearance of Daniel Bernhardt as Agent Johnson when he says the iconic quote, "Mr. Anderson," which was always said by Agent Smith, who was played by Hugo Weaving in the original movies. Another hint at deja vu is the inclusion of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's new Morpheus. Watching him and Neo train in the dojo is a callback to when Laurence Fishburne's Morpheus was teaching Neo the ways of the simulation and showing him the ropes.

The Matrix 4 serves as a nice continuation for veteran fans to see more of the world that Lana Wachowski is bringing back to life, while also potentially serving as a nice introductory point for many new viewers looking to get into the series. The juxtaposition of the old and new footage may inspire people to give the iconic franchise a chance and go back to watch the older movies for the first time.

The first few reveals for The Matrix 4 were not as heavy on the action, which led many to believe that the film will be heavily focused on the plot. However, this new trailer was a welcome change. It shows that while the plot may confuse a lot of people, the movie will still end up delivering on the action that these films are known for.

The Matrix Resurrections will be in theaters and on HBO Max on December 22nd, 2021.
