Rumors have been swirling around the upcoming film, including hints that a super unexpected secret cameo could appear in The Marvels by connecting to arguably one of the worst Marvel movies ever made. It seems like the perfect movie for some surprise appearances. The Marvels is effectively a sequel to 2019's Captain Marvel and 2022's excellent Disney Plus series Ms. Marvel while also picking up some threads left by 2021's surreal hit series WandaVision. So what's one more, right?
Well, that "one more" may be tied into that secret cameo. A new preview for The Marvels shared on the Marvel Entertainment YouTube channel seems, at first glance, to function as a teaser for the film's upcoming November 10th release. But within those 15 seconds hides a subtle nod at something that's been teased for years in the MCU. Throughout the trailer, words appear to slowly convey the phrase, "Be there for what comes next." As the final words fade, one letter lingers long enough to catch the eye. The letter "X" remains behind, hinting that finally, the X-Men will make their grand debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
It would make sense that The Marvels would be the chosen entry point for the mutant heroes known as the X-Men, most notably due to the big revelation at the end of Ms. Marvel that Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) is a mutant herself. In the show, it served as a partial explanation for her powers. But in the overall MCU, it was meant to indicate that the X-Men will finally show up at some point. Naturally, they wanted to make the fans wait. But it looks like that wait may be over. The Marvels follows Kamala, Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), and WandaVision's newly superpowered Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) as they attempt to learn why their powers have become entangled. Maybe this could be how the X-Men are introduced, via some universe-hopping reaction to their powers.
One strange little caveat to this exciting development is how all signs seem to point to Kelsey Grammer's Beast potentially serving as the big X-Men reveal. Aside from starring in X-Men: The Last Stand, one of the most criticized comic book movies, it's not like he was a particular standout any further than the novelty of seeing Dr. Frasier Crane all blue and fuzzy. If they're going that route, why not someone even more significant or hilarious? Why not Halle Berry as Storm or a real curveball with Daniel Radcliffe as Wolverine?
Whatever the case, it seems a near certainty that The Marvels will serve as the debut vehicle for the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's almost a shame. As exciting and hilarious as the movie looks based on the previews, the MCU seems to be setting up The Marvels to fail with its marketing and the timing of its release. Introducing a whole new branch of the universe in that way would be weak. Here's hoping the quality speaks for itself.
