  • According to leaked information, The Marvels is currently projected to have a runtime of 1 hour 38 minutes, potentially making it the shortest movie in the MCU catalog.
  • Despite being the shortest movie, The Marvels still maintains the franchise's trend of running over an hour and a half, showcasing the Marvel Cinematic Universe's tendency to go big in its storytelling.

Even before the Captain Marvel sequel's premiere, the Marvel Cinematic Universe's next entry is already shooting for the stars in more ways than one. Well, maybe this particular instance is less about the stars and more in the lower stratosphere. The point is, The Marvels is coming in hot, and it looks like it will set a new milestone for the MCU.

The Marvels is already set up as a sequel to several Marvel projects. In particular, it's set to tie up loose ends from the excellent Ms. Marvel and WandaVision, which introduced two of the film's stars. It's also a direct sequel to 2019's Captain Marvel and a follow-up to Captain Marvel's appearance in the same year's Avengers: Endgame. But most notably, it also serves as a continuation of the recent Disney Plus series Secret Invasion. This makes The Marvels notable for tying in so many projects. But that isn't its only noteworthy aspect.

Cryptic4KQual, a Twitter user whose whole deal is leaking movie and TV runtimes for some reason, has just offered their take on The Marvels. According to them, the movie is currently set to clock in at 1 hour 38 minutes. This is significant because, if it's true, it means that The Marvels will officially be the shortest movie in the entire MCU catalog. It should be stated, however, that even Cryptic4KQual added the disclaimer stating this runtime isn't final, meaning the movie may receive at least one more new cut before its upcoming release.

The reported length of The Marvels would put it squarely in front of 2008's The Incredible Hulk MCU debut starring Edward Norton, which comes in at 1 hour 52 minutes. But it's interesting how even the projected shortest movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still over an hour and a half. Truly "short" movies tend to run just over an hour or even under at times. It shows that this particular franchise is one to go big or go home.

The Marvels will bring Kamala Khan back (Iman Vellani) after her endearing debut as the titular hero in Ms. Marvel. But she'll be joined by Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) from WandaVision and Kamala's idol Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) in what's shaping up to be a pretty entertaining team-up flick. The premise teased in a post-credits scene of Ms. Marvel involves the three heroes seeing their powers become intertwined to the point where using them swaps their place with another trio member. Surely, there are many jolly japes to be had.

The Marvels is set to explain several questions fans still have after the previous films and shows. But one question is, will the rumored runtime affect the flow and story> That one may be a bit tougher to answer. But luckily, the wait won't be long, and apparently, neither will the movie.

The Marvels will be released theatrically on November 10, 2023.
