Highlights

  • The Marvels has received mixed reviews and currently has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 58%, making it one of the lowest-rated MCU films.
  • Despite the low score, some reviewers are praising Iman Vellani's Ms. Marvel and the film's emotional depth and embrace of the weird side of the MCU.
  • The low Rotten Tomatoes score is concerning for the film's box office prospects, as positive reviews could have helped generate more interest from audiences.

The Marvels' Rotten Tomatoes score was revealed as the first reviews dropped. While many critics praised the Captain Marvel sequel, it currently isn't enough to stop the film from debuting with one of the MCU's lowest Rotten Tomatoes scores.

Captain Marvel 2 has experienced a rough rollout ahead of its release. While Captain Marvel was a $1 billion box office success, The Marvels box office projections dropped a few days before its release, an unusual and ominous sign for the sequel. While there might have been hope that positive reactions could boost The Marvels' box office prospects, early reviews indicate this might not happen.

The Marvels executive producer Mary Livanos has reassuring words for audiences who missed WandaVision and Ms. Marvel on Disney Plus.

As of the evening of November 8, The Marvels' Rotten Tomatoes score is 58% based on 114 reviews. While The Marvels' score has changed throughout the day, it's generally hovered around 54% on Rotten Tomatoes. As it stands, The Marvels' Rotten Tomatoes score is currently behind every other MCU movie except for the negatively reviewed Ant-Man 3 (46%) and Eternals (47%). While The Marvels' Rotten Tomatoes score will likely change over the next few days, it remains to be seen if it will improve or decrease.

Considering positive reviews could have renewed interest in The Marvels and reversed its low box office projections, this Rotten Tomatoes score is a worrying sign. Fans believe Marvel Studios is well aware of the problem, with some noting that The Marvels' recent promotional material has shifted focus onto the Avengers and the potential MCU debut of the X-Men. However, many fans believe the spotlight should be on Brie Larson's Carol Danvers, Teyonah Parris' Monica Rambeau, and Iman Vellani's Kamala Khan. A superhero movie with three women in the lead roles is unheard of, much less two of them being women of color. Unfortunately, Marvel Studios seemingly believes it's necessary to entice audiences with Avengers and mutants.

Despite the low Rotten Tomatoes score, The Marvels received some enthusiastic reviews. Iman Vellani's Ms. Marvel endeared herself to fans when she debuted in the eponymous hero's Disney Plus show, and her return in The Marvels has seemingly charmed critics. Some are also commending the film for its emotional beats and for embracing the weird side of the MCU.

Should more critics weigh in with positive reviews, The Marvels could avoid the dreaded "Rotten" monier and earn the "Certified Fresh" title. On the other hand, perhaps MCU fans could see The Marvels regardless and judge for themselves.

The Marvels will be released in theaters on November 10, 2023.
