Highlights

  • The Marvels has become a streaming sensation, proving quality speaks for itself despite initial box office struggles.
  • Thanks to a strong fan base, the movie topped streaming charts, overshadowing negative narratives surrounding its release.
  • The all-female leading cast shines in The Marvels, sparking hope for a potential Ms. Marvel season 2 and more character developments.

The Marvels was quickly called the Marvel Cinematic Universe's latest failure after becoming a box office bomb. However, it has achieved a rather substantial victory, seemingly flying in the face of the hate-filled deluge that haunted it since long before release.

Captain Marvel 2 has had its narrative dominated by those celebrating its lackluster box office performance despite generally positive to even glowing reactions from those who saw the movie. The story many seemed to be latching on to was that the sequel to 2019's already excellent Captain Marvel failed to live up to expectations, an understandable assumption given various factors like its poor marketing. But a new milestone proves fans dig the film when they know about it. Aside from adding a new method of multiversal travel to the MCU, The Marvels has plenty of other crowd-drawing aspects, and the numbers don't lie.

The Marvels: Iman Vellani Reveals What Was Cut From The Young Avengers Scene

The Marvels star Iman Vellani reveals what was cut from the original version of Ms. Marvel's surprising Young Avengers teaser at the end.

The latest report from The Hollywood Reporter's streaming charts notes that The Marvels has comfortably topped the list of the most-streamed movies for the most recent Neilsen rating week of February 5th to the 11th. That puts it in the esteemed company of heavy-hitting series like Young Sheldon and Mr. & Mrs. Smith while topping the still-popular Super Mario Bros. Movie. The Marvels' unfortunate run in theaters may have turned off some to the idea of seeing it. But it turns out quality does speak for itself.

the marvels

The Marvels sees a very likely team-up when a newly discovered artifact connects the powers of 3 heroes. Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) becomes entangled with the now-adult version of her departed best friend's daughter Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris, last seen in WandaVision) and superfan Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani, last seen in the excellent series Ms. Marvel) and the trio of heroes must find a way to get themselves in sync to fight a new threat that is putting several worlds in danger. The film excels with the addictive and often hilarious dynamic between the heroes and includes one of the best Marvel moments of 2023 with a scene involving so, so many kittens.

So how did The Marvels bounce back to such a powerful degree? It may have seemed a lost cause after the negative narrative pushed during its box office run that even birthed rumors of Larson possibly quitting as Captain Marvel. But it's easy to underestimate the power of certain loud voices around the internet. The Marvels began its life at a disadvantage due to its all-female leading cast and other similar factors, which tend to draw the attention of crowds that want nothing more than to see such a movie fail. But once those folks finally quieted down, it seems people saw a cool-looking new movie on the Disney Plus homepage and went for it.

Overall, this is a well-earned new development for The Marvels. Kamala and her family alone are worth the price of admission, with Vellani stealing the show as the charmingly bubbly new hero. So, between that and the movie's newfound popularity, maybe there's a chance for a much-deserved Ms. Marvel season 2 and more of all these characters. Either way, congrats on the new milestone.

The Marvels is available to stream on Disney Plus.
