Highlights

  • The Marvels had originally planned to introduce a well-known actor as a big Marvel hero who then dies abruptly.
  • This idea of casting a famous name only to kill off the character quickly has been done before, as seen in the Spy Kids series with a cameo by Elijah Wood.
  • Despite the scrapped idea, The Marvels still aims to deliver a light-hearted and comedic tone, with the director's decision reflecting the film's already humorous atmosphere.

It looks like The Marvels almost had a bit of a boost to its cheeky side before changing up its ideas. The film already appears to be going all-in on the goofy bits, but earlier on, one particular moment may have gone from goofy all the way to downright daffy.

The Marvels serves as a sequel movie to 5 different Marvel projects, which may seem like a daunting prerequisite for those who just want a fun film. But that might be a deceptive history it's sporting because this upcoming feature appears ready and willing to finally give Marvel fans a more light-hearted comedy in the vein of favorites like Thor: Ragnarok. To that end, a new rumor now suggests that a cut idea from the film would have introduced a cameo to excite the viewers before ending it in a hilariously abrupt way.

Prominent industry insider MyTimeToShineHello recently posted a claim on Twitter regarding a scrapped scene from The Marvels, and it sounds like it would have been something special. "The original plan for The Marvels was to cast a well-known name (they were looking at Clive Owen and George Clooney) to play a big Marvel hero from the comics who we think will have a big role in the movie but then dies at the end of the first act," she wrote. "That was scrapped." Just take a second to think about how that would have played out.

The idea of bringing someone like Clooney into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a popular hero only to see him unceremoniously killed off shortly after is honestly worth a good snort-laugh. As hilarious as this concept is, it's actually not the first time such a thing has happened. One of the Spy Kids movies did something similar with a cameo by Elijah Wood who himself is immediately eliminated by a security system shortly after his heroic appearance. That's one heck of an inspiration.

The Marvels follows the trio of Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, and Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel as they search for a solution after their powers become entangled with each other. Whenever one of them uses their light-based abilities, it causes them to change places with another of the three no matter where they are. It certainly already seems like the premise of a movie looking for more toothy laughs than sharp gasps. So the fact that director Nia DaCosta deemed the celebrity death cameo as unimportant may speak to the film's already levity-laden vibe.

Even so, it would have been worth the extra runtime just to see Clooney join the MCU and essentially get Harrison Ford's wish for Han Solo immediately granted. The Marvels is already set to potentially break one record, so why not set another one for fastest superhero death?

The Marvels is set to release theatrically on November 10th, 2023.
