Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) will have many shenanigans with her cast members in the upcoming film, The Marvels. However, one co-star didn’t get as much face time with the actor.

Four years after the MCU finally introduced Captain Marvel into the ranks of iconic characters, the 2019 film is finally getting a sequel. As opposed to the solo film, Carol Danvers will be joined by two relatively new characters. The former pilot will reunite with her best friend’s daughter, Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) while meeting her biggest fan, Iman Vellani's new mutant Kamala Khan. The three characters have quite a situation after they realize their powers have become entangled. Helmed by Candyman director Nia DaCosta, the film will feature Marvel Studios' first fully female ensemble.

But one character was left out of the fun when shooting The Marvels. Major character Goose will also return in the film, but could not shoot any scenes with Larson. Because of the actor’s allergies, all her scenes with the flerken had to film with either a stunt double or one of the animal trainers on set. Speaking with Total Film, trainer Jo Vaughan explained, “We would have one of us standing in a [green or blue] suit while doing the action with the cat. We had a three-month training period.” The training paid off because while the cats couldn’t shoot with the movie’s star, they came to set every day prepared to hit their marks.

For the Goose scenes, the trainers used industry professionals, Nemo and Tango. The two cats would serve different functions in their capacity as Goose. Nemo was the go-to animal for all the alien’s action scenes, while Tango was the cat they used for the close-ups. And for the flerken babies featured in The Marvels trailer, the production used ten kittens that ran rampant around the set.

Cats are so notoriously difficult in real life it is a wonder how they pulled everything together for the thematically heavy Captain Marvel sequel. But while it caused Larson some initial discomfort, The Marvels would be disappointing if Goose didn’t return. Aptly named for the pet running around a former pilot, the cat was a welcome addition to the first film. Discovering that Goose was some Cthulu-type monster revealed how Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) lost his eye and the softer side of the future Director of SHIELD, shown in the film doting on the creature in an unlike-Fury way. When The Marvels premieres later this year, there will surely be more tomfoolery with the deadly flerken, who is more than meets the eye.

The Marvels is scheduled to premiere in theaters on November 10, 2023.
