Chapter 5 of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum follows Gollum as he attempts to escape from the Dark Tower. Having spent years preparing for the fated day, many would assume that the plan he has devised is foolproof, but sadly, not everything goes according to said plan; after reconvening with the Grashneg, Gollum ends up falling into the Sewers below the Tower of Light.

Upon regaining control of Gollum, players will be one step closer to leaving Mordor, but first, they must figure out a way to pass through the Sewers ahead. Since the Grashneg can't swim, players will also need to help him reach the other side, which can be quite difficult. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is chock-full of challenging puzzles, but the Sewers puzzle is one of the hardest.

How To Solve The Sewers Puzzle In The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum

Climbing down the ladder onto the lower platform and turning left, Gollum must leap into the water below, swim to the other side, and climb up onto the square platform with the ladder. At the top of this ladder, he will need to run across the wall to the right to reach the lever on the platform ahead. Pulling this lever will raise the water level, which will also create a bridge for the Grashneg to move further into the Sewers.

To raise the water level once more, players must turn Gollum around and enter Companion Mode to command the Grashneg to walk across the bridge, climb the ladder, and pull the next lever.

Once the water rises for a second time, Gollum can turn left and swim toward the wall ahead to climb up into the next area. Turning right, he can then interact with the lever next to the edge to lower a second bridge for the Grashneg.

Turning around to face the ladder, players must enter Companion Mode again to command the Grashneg to pull the lever at the top; then, the water will rise for a third time.

Climbing the now somewhat submerged ladder up to where the Grashneg pulled the lever, Gollum can turn left to see the final two levers he needs to pull, one to the left and another to the right. Using Gollum Sense, players will also notice the three barrels floating in the water, two of which are needed to reach the remaining levers.

To reach the platform on the right, Gollum must jump into the water and approach the floating barrels next to the rightmost lever. He must push these barrels toward the crane on the left-hand side of the room, where he should place them next to the rope emerging from the water.

Once this has been done, Gollum must swim back to where the barrels on the right-hand side of the room were previously floating and enter Companion Mode to command the Grashneg to pull the lever again. The water level will then begin to lower, and if Gollum was floating next to the rope, he will now be standing on solid ground and will be high enough to reach the next lever.

After the first water gate has been closed, Gollum should jump back into the water, proceed to the right, and climb the ladder leading back to the entrance of the Sewers. At the top of the ladder, he should then turn around and leap onto the wooden walkway floating in the water.

At the end of the walkway, Companion Mode can be used to command the Grashneg to pull the lever again, which will then raise the walkway Gollum is standing on so he can reach the final lever.

Once the final lever has been pulled, Gollum can backtrack to the platform just under where the Grashneg is standing and use the ladder at the opposite side of the wall to travel down to the lowest point of the Sewers.

The Grashneg will then walk toward a gate, open it, and begin climbing another ladder, at the end of which, both he and his Gollum's two selves can leave the Sewers.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, with a Nintendo Switch release planned for later this year.
