Though the Elves treat Gollum with much more respect than Sauron’s followers, Gollum remains eager to escape. In the final chapter of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, he attempts to flee once more, but before he can leave the Mirkwood, he must figure out how to open the Haze Gate in the Aqueduct Ruins.

Upon reaching the Haze Gate in the Aqueduct Ruins, Gollum will once again be captured by Sauron’s forces, who are also eager to leave the Elves’ domain. Seeing this, Gollum insists that, with Mell’s help, he can open the Haze Gate for them to return to Mordor.

The blind Elf, Mell, will tell Gollum to find some water so they can communicate telepathically. To find some, Gollum must turn right and use the two protruding rocks on the wall to reach the vines overhead. Climbing these vines to the right, he can drop onto a small walkway where he can find and interact with the water.

While touching this water, players can change what symbol appears on the Haze Gate. According to Mell, the correct pattern on the Haze Gate has something to do with a deer, so players must change both sides of the door until they have created the outline of one.

Gollum will then need to place two gemstones in the Haze Gate, one of which can be found on the ground next to Mell. To find the second gemstone, Gollum must throw a rock at the bird’s nest in the tree to the left of the Haze Gate. If players have run out of rocks by this point of the chapter, they can find more next to the water.

If players are struggling to find the nest, they should activate Gollum Sense, as doing so will reveal the exact location of the second gemstone. Once a rock has been thrown at the nest, the bird nesting there will fly away, causing the gemstone in the nest to fall to the ground.

Climbing back down to the ground, Gollum can collect the two gemstones in front of the door and interact with the candle to the right to extinguish it. Once this has been done, he must climb the Haze Gate itself and place the gemstones in the correct slots.

On the left-hand side of the gate, a gemstone must be placed in the rightmost slot to illuminate the deer’s ear; on the right side, the second gemstone can be slotted into the available slot on the right to complete the deer’s antler. Once both Gemstones have been placed in the correct slots, the Haze Gate will open, and Gollum and Mell will escape.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, with a Nintendo Switch release planned for later this year.
