A brand new teaser trailer has been released for the upcoming The Little Mermaid, a live-action adaptation that has started many conversations since it was confirmed. The 30-second trailer showcases some new footage from the much-awaited film, including a glimpse at Melissa McCarthy's Ursula, one of the most iconic antagonists ever created by Disney.

When Disney's The Little Mermaid adaptation was announced, many of the franchise's fans were excited to see the songs and plot play out in live action. Similar to the first The Little Mermaid teaser trailer, this one offers a quick look at one of the most iconic numbers, “Part of Your World,” sung by Halle Bailey's Ariel. The underwater sequences look stunning as Ariel swims around and interacts with aquatic animals, all while beautifully singing the song. At one point, she even comes face to face with Jonah Hauer-King's Prince Eric.

One aspect of The Little Mermaid that fans have been waiting to see is their first look at McCarthy's Ursula, the half-woman and half-octopus villain in the franchise. McCarthy has portrayed a vast array of roles, and to see her play one of Disney's villains is an exciting prospect for her fans. The new The Little Mermaid teaser trailer teases her arrival. Towards the end of the trailer, her evil laughter rings through the air, and fans get a quick glimpse of Ursula's eyes and a tentacle. Shrouded in darkness, it is a blink-and-miss scene but enough to build the hype.

When it was first announced that The Little Mermaid had cast Black actress Bailey as Ariel, most people were excited to see her embody the role of one of Disney's classic characters. However, a segment of the audience wasn’t too pleased with her casting and shared racist remarks when the first teaser trailer was revealed. Bailey has since received a lot of support from other stars in the industry, and fans of the franchise have praised her for her singing voice in the first trailer.

The live-action The Little Mermaid also stars Javier Bardem as Ariel's overprotective father, King Triton, Daveed Diggs as the voice of Sebastian the musical crab, Awkwafina as the voice of Scuttle the seagull, and Jacob Tremblay as the voice of Flounder. The film will retain the plot of the original 1989 animated film, where the mermaid Ariel falls for a human prince, leading to a devilish plan created by Ursula.

The Little Mermaid is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 26, 2023.
