One of the biggest surprises of E3 2019 was the the bombshell announcement that came at the end of Nintendo's presentation when The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 was announced. Nintendo revealed the game with a dark trailer reminiscent of Majora's Mask, and while it created more questions than answers, it has left fans buzzing about the possibilities.

The trailer showed Zelda and Link traveling open world Hyrule together, exploring what appears to be an underground dungeon. They then encounter a zombified creature of some sort, who some have assumed is the reanimated corpse of Ganondorf. Some have also assumed that since the trailer showed Link and Zelda traveling together that the game may have co-op with Zelda as a playable character.

The Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma was asked directly at E3 2019 by various outlets if The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 will have co-op or if Zelda would be playable. Aonuma didn't offer direct answers. Speaking to IGN about the possibility of co-op based on how much Link and Zelda are shown together in the trailer, Aonuma said, "It's kind of interesting that you bring that up, because in Breath of the Wild, you see Zelda and Link together often too, so to go straight into the thought of co-op is very interesting to me."

In his response, Aonuma didn't confirm or deny that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 would have co-op. While this doesn't mean that the game will have co-op by any stretch of the imagination, it also leaves the door open to the possibility.

Meanwhile, Jason Schreier of Kotaku asked Aonuma about Zelda being a playable character, explaining that the end of Breath of the Wild makes it possible story-wise and that some fans have wanted to see it happen for some time. "I see. But I can't tell you," he said. Schreier then later asked Aonuma how many playable characters would be in Breath of the Wild 2, but Aonuma only said, "I can’t say" instead of giving a direct answer.

Since Aonuma didn't flat-out deny that these features would be in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, it seems to suggest that the development team may at least be considering them as possibilities. Since we know so little about the game ourselves at this point, it's really hard to say. However, with the development team playing a lot of Red Dead Redemption 2, players can at least count on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 having perhaps even deeper open world elements than before.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 is in development exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
