With season 1 finished, fans of HBO's The Last of Us are eagerly awaiting season 2 and wondering what's in store for Ellie and Joel. Although filming has yet to begin, the location for filming season 2 has been revealed.

The Last of Us season 1 proved to be a massive success. After just two episodes, HBO announced they had greenlit a second season. The first season followed Ellie and Joel's journey across post-apocalyptic America as they fought through foes, Infected and fully human, to reach safety. The end of season 1 sees Joel reunited with his brother Tommy and Ellie safe but suspicious of how Joel got her out of the clutches of the Fireflies that captured her at the beginning of the season finale. Season 1 covered the entirety of The Last of Us Part I and the DLC The Last of Us: Left Behind. Show creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann confirmed that while season 2 would cover events from The Last of Us Part II, it wouldn't be the only season to do so, leaving fans to wonder just how much of the second game's story will be told in season 2.

Deadline reports that when The Last of Us season 2 filming does begin, it will take place in Vancouver, Canada. No details regarding the second season's production schedule or plot have been announced. However, fans of the game might be able to glean some information from the fact that filming will take place in Vancouver. Much of The Last of Us Part II takes place in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, an area easily replicated by its northern neighbor, Vancouver. This is significant because everything set in Seattle, Washington, in The Last of Us Part II happens after Ellie flees Jackson, Wyoming, to avenge Joel's death. Since it doesn't look like the production team plans to spend much if any time in the Canadian province where they replicated Jackson, Wyoming, iJoel may not spend much more time on-screen in the second season than he did in the second game.

The entirety of The Last of Us season 1 was filmed in Canada, so it's no surprise the HBO show will return to the country for the second season's production. The production team traveled around Alberta, Canada to replicate American locations like Austin, Texas, Kansas City, Missouri, and Jackson, Wyoming. Although the production team did additional photography in Kansas City, Missouri, most of what viewers saw in season 1 was from Canada - and it seems like most of what they'll see in The Last of Us season 2 will be in Canada.

The announcement that The Last of Us 2 season 2 will be filmed just north of the American Pacific Northwest hints at how much time the show will take to explore the events that occur at the beginning of The Last of Us Part II. While no announcements have been made regarding how many episodes Pascal is set to appear in for season 2, Mazin and Druckmann have made it clear that they plan to take time to adapt the events of The Last of Us Part II. So, while it seems likely that a large portion of season 2 will take place in Seattle, Washington, it's still impossible to know just how much time fans will have with Joel in season 2.

The Last of Us season 1 is available to stream now on HBO Max.
