Sony offers players the option to upgrade the base version of The Last of Us Part 2 to the Remastered PS5 version.

In addition to adding new concept art, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered's February 13 patch 1.1.1 fixed a number of issues, including one that prevented progression-critical items from being detected while playing on Enhanced Listen Mode in New Game+. Like the previous update 1.1.0 that dropped on February 1, the most recent patch also addressed some problems that plagued the game's No Return mode, one of the many new features of The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered.

No Return, which is considered by some to be the remaster's standout feature, turns the third-person title into a roguelike survival experience. The hardcore mode lets gamers play as one of ten The Last of Us characters, including series protagonists Joel Miller and Ellie Williams. While each character possesses unique skills and abilities, some can be seen as being stronger than others, which has resulted in players running with those who they think are the best The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered No Return characters.

Even though Naughty Dog terminated development of a multiplayer game set in The Last of Us universe called The Last of Us Online, No Return, with its use of AI companions, was able to show that a co-op game in the series could work well. Explaining its decision to cancel The Last of Us Online, Naughty Dog said it would have had to commit all of its resources to the project in order for it to be released and supported. This would have, in turn, affected the development of Naughty Dog's future single-player games, according to the California-based studio.

The Last of Us series creator and Naughty Dog president Neil Druckmann has revealed that he believed it was possible to add one more chapter to the series, giving the impression that The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered did not mark the end of the series and that it was possible for Naughty Dog to work on a potential The Last of Us 3 in the future. Such a project could take inspiration from other games should it ever come see the light of day, as Naughty Dog took note of the world design and combat of FromSoftware's Bloodborne during The Last of Us Part 2's development.
