All combat and stealth aside, The Last of Us Part 1 is a game that thrives in its quieter moments. Naughty Dog’s approach to character-driven narrative gives space for Ellie and Joel to develop, breathing life into the characters and the world around them in The Last of Us Part 1.
One way in which the game builds the relationship between the deuteragonists is by allowing the player to engage directly in conversation with Ellie. By paying attention to her and other characters, Joel can prompt a conversation that players would otherwise miss to help get to know the characters. This guide will show players where they can trigger these prompts in The Quarantine Zone to grab the trophy: “Getting to Know You.”
To trigger an optional conversation, press the Triangle button when the prompt appears. Players can check their optional conversation interaction progress by opening the Chapters section on the main menu and looking at the collectible readout on the right side of the screen.
The Quarantine Zone | 20 Years Later
Conversation 1 of 1
This first optional conversation can be had as Joel and Tess make their way to the FEDRA checkpoint at the very start of the chapter. After passing the group being tested for infection, continue down the street to find a couple on the right-hand sidewalk having a conversation. After it ends, talk to them with the Triangle button.
The Quarantine Zone | Beyond the Wall

Later in the chapter, Joel and Tess will emerge from the tunnels after collecting their gear. The pair will find themselves in an abandoned pizza restaurant that Joel and Tess exit out into a lush square. Stop just outside and talk to Tess.
Conversation 2 of 2
As the pair explore, they will come across an abandoned building filled with spores. Making their way inside, they will crouch through a hole in the wall to find the body of a dead Infected slumped against the wall. Interact with the prompt to trigger this conversation.
The Quarantine Zone | The Cargo
Conversation 1 of 1
After dealing with Robert and meeting up with Marlene, the group will make their way through some buildings and to a bridge swarming with FEDRA guards. After taking all of them out, approach the dead Firefly soldiers in the middle of the bridge and speak with Marlene.
