Following the events at the university, Ellie must use everything Joel has taught her to survive in this chapter of The Last of Us Part 1. While out hunting animals, she comes across a large buck and players will have their first opportunity to play as Ellie, using the bow to kill a deer. Players can choose between the type of bow aiming system they would prefer to use in the accessibility options, which even provides returning players the option to use the old system where the arc of the bow is displayed.

As this chapter coincides with parts from Left Behind, players can decide whether if they would prefer to play the standalone first before diving into the winter chapter of the base game or to continue forging ahead to see the story through to the end. Players will be able to get a feel for Ellie’s gameplay and how it differs from Joel. For instance, Ellie is unable to brute force her way through situations, meaning that players need to be smarter about how they approach combat. This is best exemplified with the boss fight against David at the end, and further developed in The Last of Us Part 2.

The Lakeside Resort

Due to the nature of this chapter, collectibles are on the lower side, but there are several interesting things that the duo pick up along the way. Here are all the artifacts found in the ninth chapter, Lakeside Resort.

The Last of Us Part I Artifacts Ellie inventory

While assuming control of Ellie at the start of this chapter, players will have access to her inventory for the first time. Ellie has several interesting items in her backpack, some of which are familiar to the player and provide a unique insight into Ellie’s own personal journey throughout the game. Each of these items are considered artifacts, and while players do not need to collect them, they can be examined. They include:

  • Switchblade
  • Walkman
  • Sam’s Robot
  • Note from Mom
  • No Pun Intended Volume Too
  • To Get to the Other Side
  • No Pun Intended
  • Joel & Sarah Photo

While controlling Joel, players will duck into a nearby building and Joel will automatically pick up Ellie’s backpack from a rack of shelves.

Meat Ledger

The Last of Us Part I Artifacts Meat Ledger

Before players leave to rescue Ellie from David after collecting her backpack, players should turn to the right to find this artifact on another shelf.

In total, players will be able to collect and view 99 notes and artifacts in The Last of Us Part 1 and Left Behind. Players who undergo this collect-a-thon will be rewarded the trophy "Chronicles", and move one step closer to earning the coveted platinum trophy.

The Last of Us Part 1 is available on PlayStation 5 and a PC version is in development.
